Biography
Origin
Catalina Marie Flores
Catalina Flores performed her duties as a newly appointed government official in Blüdhaven, where she attended a formal meeting with the city's mayor and police commissioner. During this interaction, she reviewed municipal records and discussed the high crime rates and corruption within the local police department. She later transitioned into her vigilante persona to conduct a solo patrol of the city's rooftops and alleyways. She engaged in a direct physical confrontation with a group of criminals, utilizing her gauntlet blades and hand-to-hand combat skills to incapacitate them. Following the altercation, she was observed scaling the side of a building using her specialized footwear to evade detection by the authorities. She also monitored the activities of Nightwing from a distance, observing his combat techniques and movements without making direct contact. Throughout these actions, she maintained a focus on gathering intelligence and asserting her presence as a new tactical force within the city. (Nightwing v2 #71)
Things soon took a turn for the worse when Blockbuster hired other villains to attack those Grayson held dear. Tarantula was devastated as she was unable to stop a bomb explosion in Grayson's building complex that was also the home of John Law. Confronted by Lady Vic and warned not to go against Blockbuster's wishes, she shoots Vic in the chest. Seeking vengeance for John Law's demise, Tarantula helped Nightwing record Blockbuster's confession, but when she gave the tape to her brother, he crushed it because of a deal he made with Blockbuster to get her out of prison. Tarantula was out on the streets soon enough, and when the battle between Nightwing and Blockbuster heated up, Tarantula involved herself and shot Blockbuster. Nightwing could have prevented the murder, but, driven to the edge of sanity by Blockbuster's calculated assaults on everyone whom Nightwing held dear (Blockbuster knew his secret identity and exploited this), in a moment of absolute misery Nightwing stood aside and let Tarantula kill him. Afterwards, wounded and suffering a near-mental breakdown due to Blockbuster's attacks as well as his own complicity in the villain's murder, Grayson was unable to stop Tarantula from raping him where he fell. (Nightwing v2 #93)
However, when the greatest gang war was unleashed in Gotham, Nightwing was asked to return and aid Batman and the rest of their allies to keep the city under control. Tarantula followed Nightwing to Gotham and took control of the Latino Unified Gang by becoming their leader. (Nightwing v2 #96) Batman allowed Tarantula to stay, and she provided protection for the young people of her gang, and kept them from spreading violence in the city. (Batman: Gotham Knights v1 #56)
