History
The Chest of Cortés was the name given to a trove of treasure that was created during the reign of the Aztec's in the early 16th century. During that era, the Spanish arrived in Mexico with them seeking to conquer it. The Aztec attempted to placate the Spanish and placed 882 identical pieces of gold within a stone chest that they gave to Hernán Cortés. This was blood money to be paid to stem the slaughter that he wreaked on their armies. However, the treasure instead of satisfying Cortés it merely fuelled his greed with the heathen gods cursing the gold. Thus, any mortal that removed a piece of the gold from the chest was to be punished for eternity.
