Biography

Origin

Choji Akimichi (Japanese: 秋道チョウジ, Hepburn: Akimichi Chōji) was a male member of the Akimichi Clan (秋道一族, Akimichi Ichizoku) of Konohagakure where he was the son of Chōza Akimichi (秋道チョウザ, Akimichi Chōza). He was slated to be the Sixteenth Head of the Akimichi (秋道16代目当主, Akimichi Jūrokudaime Tōshu) where he was trained to be new successor to the family. As a child, he was often put down for not being very good in the game of 'Ninja' that resembled hide and seek that employed the use of card board shuriken to tag a person. In that time, a school mate named Shinta often berated Choji and often claimed that any team with Akimichi was sure to lose. Eventually, this culminated in them refusing to play with him at all. However, Shikamaru Nara decided to stick up for Choji and even claimed that the teams would be uneven if Akimichi was not allowed to join them. This gave Choji some hope though the other children still refused to let him play with them.

During Chōji's time at the Academy, he was often caught eating in class otherwise getting into trouble along with fellow deviants Shikamaru, Kiba Inuzuka, and Naruto Uzumaki. Together, these four would cut class or otherwise be testing the patience of Iruka Umino, their Academy teacher. During the Search for Tsunade, when Naruto was struggling to learn the second step of training for the Rasengan, he recalled how once, during his days in the Academy, he, along with Shikamaru, Kiba, and Naruto were held back in class, and lectured about their all around lack in concentration — in Chōji's case, he was thinking more about food than about doing his school work. During the arc involving the trap master Gennō from the long-gone Kagerō Village, it was mentioned how Shikamaru, Chōji, Kiba, and Naruto would skip class together and hang out at the kunai practice course, which was situated under the Academy, to hide from Iruka.

He and his classmates later came to take part in the Chūnin Exams where they took part in the written test. Ino came to help her teammates by cheating off Sakura's test answers using her Mind Body Switch Technique and then passing it along to her teammates. Ultimately, the written exam as simply a test to see if a ninja overcame pressure and intensity. This saw him and his comrades take part in a test at the Forty-Fourth Training Ground (第44演習場, Daiyonjūyon Enshūjō, English TV: Training Ground 44) where within the woods they were to recover companion scrolls from rival teams. Whilst there, he along with Shikamaru and Ino came to spy Sakura being targeted by a team of Oto genin who threatened to kill her. Team 10 came to fear for their own safety if they intervened with Choji suggesting that they run from the scene. However, Zaku Abumi came to call Choji 'fatso' resulting in him going berserk and attacking the sound ninja leading to hostilities erupting between the two sides. Choji was ultimately defeated by the enemy but the fight delayed the sound ninja long enough for Sasuke Uchiha to awaken where he used the Cursed Seal of Heaven to force the enemy to retreat. In the preliminaries of the exam, Chōji began feeling hesitant about fighting, but Asuma convinced him to fight, promising to treat him to barbecue if he won, and to intervene if he was in danger. In the last match of the preliminaries, Chōji was matched against Dosu Kinuta. At the start of the match, Ino Yamanaka yelled to him that he was fat, so that he would be spurred into fighting. Figuring Dosu's sound based attack won't work on him if he doesn't hear it, he uses the Multi-Size Technique and uses the Human Bullet Tank to charge at Dosu. After Dosu manages to avoid Chōji's attack a few times, Chōji gets lodged in a wall. With Chōji unable to get out the wall, Dosu takes the initiative of sending a blast of sound into Chōji's bulk, with its effectiveness increased as sound travels better through water. As a reward to Chōji for getting so far in the Chūnin Exams, and as a bribe to help with Shikamaru's training, Asuma takes Chōji to a buffet, but Chōji ends up eating too much and gains stomach pains, forcing him to spend some time in the hospital. He recovered in time to watch Shikamaru and Sasuke's matches, but was put to sleep during the ensuing invasion of Konoha.

Shortly after Shikamaru's promotion to chūnin, the team celebrated at Yakiniku Q. After a brief argument over the meat, Asuma told Chōji that he should eat less and train more. While Chōji was briefly depressed, Shikamaru convinced him to be himself. When Sasuke Uchiha abandoned Konoha, Shikamaru asked Chōji to join the Sasuke Recovery Team, to which Chōji refused. Determined to have Chōji come with them, Shikamaru and Naruto Uzumaki ate some of Chōji's favourite snacks in front of his house. When they got to the last chip, Chōji burst through the front door to eat it, saying that the last chip was sacred and he cannot let someone else have it. Having fallen for Shikamaru's trick, Chōji joined the team to retrieve Sasuke. At the start of the mission, Chōji took on the Sound Four member Jirōbō. Jirōbō initially proved to be too strong for Chōji to beat, forcing Chōji to use the Akimichi clan's special Three Coloured Pills. Although reluctant to use the pills, Jirōbō's constant mocking of Shikamaru as a worthless, selfish, and uncaring leader convinced Chōji to take all three pills. With the accompanying increase in strength, he was able to kill Jirōbō noting that while it was fine for people to mock him and even eat his food, it was unforgivable to speak ill of his best friend. With that, Chōji sends a fist crashing into Jirōbō's stomach, killing the Oto-nin. As he headed through the forest, suffering the effects of the pills and severely emaciated, Chōji sees the arrow left by his comrades, he collapses beneath it, and tearfully mused to his father that he had finally found good friends. Near death, Chōji was found by members of the Medic Corps and rushed back to the village for emergency treatment. Thanks to the efforts of the Nara clan's medical encyclopaedia, where they had listed their research on their comrade's pills and their effects, along with Tsunade's medical expertise, Chōji was able to evade death and make a full recovery.

Overview

Personality and attributes

In appearance, Chōji Akimichi was a male human sharing many traits of his father and family line with them having a rotund build and markings on his cheeks in the form of swirls. He has spiky, light brown hair that sticks upward but grew to waist-length as he became older.

Choji was shown to be a very kind, polite, and caring person. These characteristics were said to be his greatest strength by both his father Chōza and his former teacher Asuma Sarutobi while his greatest weakness was his lack of self-confidence.

Despite his relatively portly appearance, Choji insisted he was not fat and instead using explanations like being 'big-boned'. It was shown that he took great offence if someone referred to him as fat causing him to become hostile and increase his resolve to battle. This was regardless if it was a ally or foe who made the comment with his friends often trying to stop others from saying those words.

Choji had a love for food with his favorite being Korean barbecue, general snacks and sweets, and basically anything that was edible. He openly displays this love of food by wearing the kanji for "eat" on his outfit at first and was commonly seen eating from a bag of chips. His nigh-constant hunger was a constant annoyance for his teammates, as sating himself often comes before other necessities such as stealth and teamwork. Because of this, his teammates often use food against him, such as offering him food as a reward for accomplishing a task or simply using his favorite foods as a form of blackmail. In some instances Choji has difficulty restraining himself, as seen when Asuma takes him to a buffet where he proceeds to eat so much that he hurts his stomach, forcing him to go to the hospital. Nevertheless, Choji's taste for food can be an asset at times such as on missions requiring a taster or a person to take part in a food eating contest.

As a child, Choji was often put down for not being good at a game called "Ninja", a cross between tag and hide and seek, in which one team seeks to avoid the other team, which is armed with cardboard shurikens. His peers would berate him, telling him that any team he was on would lose and as such they would not allow him to play with them. One day, Shikamaru Nara stuck up for him by pointing out that the teams would be uneven if Choji didn't play, though the the other children continued to keep Choji from joining them. Choji sat with his father, who told him that despite not being popular, he would one day find a good friend whom he could stand beside forever. Shikamaru, having decided to enjoy his pastime of watching the clouds instead of playing on uneven teams, arrived to ask to join Choji and his father. Choji agreed and offered Shikamaru some of his snacks, which he gladly accepted. Because of Shikamaru's willingness to look past Choji's athletic deficiencies and recognize his true strength, Choji came to view Shikamaru as his best friend. The two have since developed complete trust in one another, with Choji willing to give up his life to defend Shikamaru, and considering the act of insulting him unacceptable.

Choji Akimichi was the son of noted Konohagakure jonin Chōza Akimichi (秋道チョウザ, Akimichi Chōza) and his wife.

By adulthood, he came to marry Karui Akimichi (秋道カルイ, Akimichi Karui) who had been a kunoichi from Kumogakure with the couple having a daughter they named Chōchō Akimichi (秋道チョウチョウ, Akimichi Chōchō).

Powers and abilities

Choji Akimichi was a male human with the ability to manipulate chakra allowing him to perform a variety of jutsu. As an Akimichi, he was able to convert the calories he consumed into chakra with this being the reason for his husky appearance and frequent eating habits. With the stored chakra, he could perform a number of trademark techniques of his clan that involved the Multi-Size Technique.

Such was his great durability and speed that he was able to survive being hit by the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path's chakra blasts and even save Shikamaru from being stomped by the statue.

He knew several fighting techniques that included:

  • Partial Multi-Size Technique (部分倍化の術 Bubun Baika no Jutsu) :
  • Multi-Size Technique (倍化の術 Baika no Jutsu) :
  • Super Multi-Size Technique (超倍化の術 Chō Baika no Jutsu) :
  • Human Bullet Tank (肉弾戦車 Nikudan Sensha) :
  • Human Bullet Yo-Yo (肉弾用々, Nikudan Yōyō) :
  • Spiked Human Bullet Tank (肉弾針戦車 Nikudan Hari Sensha) :

A special ability of his clan was the power to enter into Butterfly Mode (蝶モード Chō Mōdo) that was a heightened transformation. This mode was entered into by converting the calories of their body into chakra. The chakra as it became visible was then shaped into two large butterfly wings that could be compressed into smaller wings. During the Fourth Shinobi World War, he becomes able to form the butterfly wings on his own, bypassing the pills' dangerous side effects.

He alongside Shikamaru Nara and Ino Yamanaka came to be known as the Ino–Shika–Chō Trio (いの しか ちょうトリオ, Ino–Shika–Chō Torio). This team was actually something previously formed by their fathers who had worked together as a unit. Through exceptional team work, they were able to use their powers to complement each other and use it to defeat an enemy.
