History

Chronos (Japanese: 秘密結社クロノス, Hepburn: Kuronosu)

Around 25 years ago, they targeted the practitioners of the Tao for elimination and it was believed that the Tao Masters had all been eliminated. Among the only survivors of the Taoist wars was a Chronos Number by the name of Mason Ordrosso who became the oldest member of the organization.

Train Heartnet joined Chronos at age 18 and was infamously known as its best assassin, Black Cat. He was eventually offered the position of being the organization's manager, but declined. Chronos develops significantly in the two years since Train has left and gains control of one-third of the economy. Besides maintaining the world order, Chronos is very cautious about keeping its actions and inner workings private. Since Train knew much about the organization's dealings, the Elders initially want him to return or be killed in order to keep him quiet. Nonetheless, the attention of Chronos soon turns to a new threat that has the potential to seriously destabilize the world order: theApostles of the Stars. It is especially important to the Council of Elders because of the direct threat to their power and the fact that the Apostles' leader, Creed Diskenth, was once a member of Chronos. All concern about Train is now directed towards the rogue association. A world conference meeting in San Geles City is disrupted by several members of the Apostles, including Creed. All twenty officials-including seven from Chronos-are assassinated. Thus, the Council of Elders decide to eliminate the Apostles.

Overview

The Elders.

Such was the power and influence of this underground organization that it controlled one-third of the world's economy. They believed that they brought order to the world and its Chronos Numbers considered themselves the finest assassins on Earth. As such, they held themselves to be superior from sweepers that simply conducted tasks for money. The control they had over the planet led to many of the nations funding Chronos and its activities

There were a number of ranks within their hierarchy that included:

  • Elders : these consisted of three elderly individuals that served on the Council of Elders and guided the actions of the organization.
  • Erasers : lower ranking assassins within the hierarchy of Chronos.

Within their organization, there was an elite assassination unit called Cerberus which consisted of three Numbers that were deployed on priority assignments against dangerous targets.

The weapons of the Numbers were said to be used to rid the world of scum. Thus, to refuse the use of their weapons was akin to allowing thousands to die at the hands of the guilty. Each of the Numbers had complete mastery of their weapon which was made of Orichalcum that was the strongest metal in the world.

  • One of the notable differences between the Manga and Anime version of Black Cat is that the former refers to its assassins as Time Guardians whilst the latter calls them Numbers.

In other media

Television

  • In Black Cat, Chronos appeared in the setting of the anime television series adaptation. The Zero Numbers, a renegade group consisting of stray members of Chronos, sends a swarm of nano-machine beasts to destroy the Chronos Headquarters while the Numbers are busy attacking Creed. As a result, the Council of Elders is assassinated and the organization takes a huge hit in finances and manpower. The surviving Numbers are essentially the only members left in the entire organization. The Numbers assist Train in saving Eve from the Zero Numbers' control and vow to rebuild Chronos.
A key difference between the anime and manga was the former created a new threat known as the Zero Numbers that devastated the parent organization and eliminated he Elders.
