Klaus Voorhees

After getting out of prison, Klaus was given a job as a research assistant by Professor Ezekiel Shecktor, who sought to rehabilitate him. In remote India with Shecktor, Klaus grew bitter about his measly pay and lack of recognition. As Shecktor perfected a cure for the snake bite, Klaus developed the plan to have a cobra bite them both then he could use the antidote, which would allow him to take full credit for the discovery as Shecktor died. Klaus provoked the snake into biting both of them but didn't know the cobra had been experimented on and was radioactive. As Shecktor lay dying, Klaus used the antidote then surprisingly developed super-powers. He later created a costumed identity for himself as the Human Cobra. Thor, who came to investigate, sought out Cobra, pursuing him all the way to the United States, where Cobra was seeking to take over a chemical manufacturing plant so he could create a serum that would create an army of men just like him. When Thor attacked, Cobra used his self-designed offensive cobra-themed weapons. Despite his enhanced speed, strength and slithering ability, Cobra was blinded when a machine exploded and he rushed to a random doctor's office for help. Demanding aid from Dr. Andrews, Cobra was furious when the nurse Jane Foster summoned Thor for help. At first, Cobra tried taking Jane hostage but Thor stopped him though the villain had managed to escape. (Journey into Mystery v1 #98)

While committing robberies in costume, Cobra evaded Thor by using his Cobra-Cable and three flash bulbs of light then he snuck into a random apartment, planning to steal from a scientist, Calvin Zabo. Zabo turned into Mr. Hyde and the two villains briefly sparred, Cobra using vials of nerve gas until they agreed to team up against Thor. Hyde developed a Time Reversal Ray and they used it on Thor to track his actions back to the office of Dr. Don Blake. Cobra and Hyde attacked Blake, kidnapping Jane Foster and demanding that Blake summon Thor. Blake changed to Thor while the two villains looked out the window then he fought them in the office, in a junkyard and then in a machine exhibition, where Cobra briefly separated Thor form his hammer with a hydraulic lift. The two villains began to close in. (Journey into Mystery v1 #105) After pulling out the floor from beneath the villains, Thor managed to escape before reverting to his human form. As the police closed in, Hyde threatened to harm the crowd if Thor didn't reveal himself. Don Blake said he would help them if they got his cane out of the machine where Thor's hammer had been taken so Cobra slithered within to try to retrieve it then Hyde tore the machine apart. Blake fled into the crowd with the stick then returned as Thor and easily defeated Cobra, tossing him into Hyde. Cobra was soon arrested, yelling that Hyde would come back for him but Hyde was soon apprehended as well. (Journey into Mystery v1 #106)

Cobra (Piet Voorhees)

Cobra in All-New Captain America v1 #4.

Piet Voorhees was a human born the nephew of the original Cobra namely Klaus Voorhees. The elder Voorhees came to inject Piet with irradiated venom and turned him into the new super-powered Cobra. Cobra, with his powers of poisonous venom, flexible bones, restricting squeezes, and an enhanced sense of smell, hired himself out as an high level mercenary. He worked in southeast Asia, Bosnia, Central Asia, and Chechnya, where he delivered weapons to the rebels in exchange for diamonds. Cobra was hired by the Chaeyi to aid them in setting up American holdings. Working under Karlson, Cobra was sent with Eddie and others to secure authentic green cards and passports from Sano Orii, of the Yakuza. The transfer was interrupted by fledgling hero the White Tiger (Angela Del Toro), who made off with a portion of the documents before bounding off with Daredevil (Danny Rand). Karlson and Cobra confronted Sano, blaming him for the failure. Karlson assigned Cobra to find the woman assailant and test her out, and ordered Sano to bring in another shipment without failure. Cobra staked out Eddie's garage until the White Tiger, in a new costume, arrived. He eagerly battled her and they traded several blows, White Tiger even managing to evade his poisonous spit. After a time, Sano called Cobra to come with him for their mission. White Tiger jumped on the car, breaking a window with a crowbar, but Sano threw her off while driving. (White Tiger v1 #1)

Overview

The original Cobra's power was derived from a special kind of poisonous cobra that had been irradiated. An antidote for the venom saved his life but in the process it instilled in them the abilities of the snake. They gained many of the traits of the reptiles including a deadly bite capable of killing their enemies with a poison. The Cobra gained super-human strength allowing them to easily throw adult humans over a distance. They also had superhuman speeds allowing them to quickly evade attacks made against them. In addition, the Cobra outfitted themselves with a special costume that included various cobra-themed weapons. These included Cobra Darts that were fired from above the wrist. In addition, special capsules were loaded with Cobra Gas that were made by transforming cobra venom into a dense fast spreading vapor. The vapors were fatal to a person if they came to inhale the gas. Furthermore, he could fire a cobra-cord that was an unbreakable line that could be fired at lightning quick speeds to wrap around a target. (Journey into Mystery v1 #98)

Klaus was noted for being a bitter jealous man who viewed others with hate-filled eyes. (Journey into Mystery v1 #98)
