Biography
Cain was a male human born at the beginning as a male human where he was the world's first murderer after killing his brother Abel which he claimed was a mistake. (Spawn v1 #120) In years past, Cogliostro was known as Cain, the first murderer. He murdered his brother Abel, thus killing 1/4 of the world population of that time, and since the beginning he never wanted to serve in Hell but to rule it. He struck a deal with Malebolgia to become a Hellspawn and serve in his army. However, he feared his return to Hell when he would one day use all of his power and vowed to never use his powers again until he could figure out how to free himself of his curse. (Spawn v1 #116)
When Albert Simmons appeared in New York City, Cog first appeared to him as an alley bum in the Bowery Alleyways. There was more to him as he knew more about Spawn's situation than Spawn himself. (Spawn v1 #9)
Eventually, Cogliostro reveals that he was also a Hellspawn, having forsaken Malebolgia long ago, and refuses to use his powers; he has one "tick" of necroplasmic power left, and any use of any of his Hell-granted powers will end his Earthly existence. Still, that single bit of power has extended his lifespan to centuries, and he does not want the newest Spawn to fall to the darkness that spawned both of them. (Spawn v1 #77)
He later returned to Spawn and revealed that he was dying with him being terrified at the status of Hell after Spawn had abandoned its throne following the defeat of Malebolgia. Spawn then revealed his plan which was urn turn the Earth into a paradise utopia. (Spawn v1 #116)

Notes
- Cogliostro was created by Todd McFarlane and Neil Gaiman where he made his first appearance in Spawn v1 #9 (March, 1993).
- Neil Gaiman was one of the authors that was contracted to write an issue of Spawn. While doing so, he introduced Angela, Cogliostro, and Medieval Spawn in Spawn #9, with Todd McFarlane co-creating and designing them. According to a report by ICv2, a transfer of rights was supposed to happen on July 31, 1997 where Gaiman's rights in the characters and work he did for the Spawn and Angela comics would be swapped with McFarlane's Miracleman rights, after the payment of money owed to Gaiman. However, in October of 1997, McFarlane filed trademark applications for Miracleman.

Television
- In Todd McFarlane's Spawn, Cogliostro appeared in the 1990s HBO animated television series where he was voiced by actor Richard Dysart. This version had a different backstory that resembled that of Lord Covenant from the comics. Cogliostro was originally a knight during the age of chivalry until he became a Hellspawn with him being known as the Black Knight. However, he came to see that servitude to Malebolgia was a violation of his honor and he used black magic to free himself from being his demonic agent. Afterwards, he sought redemption by saving at least one Hellspawn from their fate and in time came to be regarded as Merlin in Arthurian legend. By the modern day, he sought to place himself as a teacher to the new Hellspawn Al Simmons in order to save his soul from falling to Malebolgia.
Films
- In Spawn, Cogliostro appeared in the 1997 live-action film adaptation where he was portrayed by actor Nicol Williamson. This version had a different backstory as he was originally a black knight named Sir John Of York who in the 15th century became a Hellspawn after his death but came to free his soul from the demon's control. After that point, he fought against them and sided with the forces of Heaven where by modern day he came to serve as a mentor to Al Simmon's after his transformation into a Hellspawn.
