History

Pre-Crisis

Cortexin was an experimental drug created on Earth in the modern age by a human scientist named Dr. Michael Grant. It was tested on a number of lab animals who demonstrated a marked increase in their intelligence where it remained in their system over generations. (Kamandi v1 #16)

Post-Crisis

Following the Crisis on Infinite Earths, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events.

Post-Flashpoint

Following the Flashpoint, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events.

During the Convergence, the rat people of Earth-51 captured Hawkman and Hawkgirl where they intended to eliminate their city on Telos by deploying a missile containing Cortexin. The rats told the two Thanagarians that Cortexin was created by humans during the years that led to the Great Disaster on their Earth. According to Lord Mog, once deployed the drug combined their bodies with the stronger beings in the world creating the intelligent races of animal races that populated this version of Earth. This was a dark secret known only to a few such as the rat people who uncovered it from their excavations. Thus, in the battle on Telos, they intended to launch the Cortexin against Midway City and turn its population into more rat people thus winning the challenge. Hawkman and Hawkgirl with Thanagarian allies managed to thwart the rats from accomplishing their plans. (Convergence: Hawkman v1 #2)
