History

Origin

The Creature Commandos were the creations of U.S. Army Project M that was an effort to create monstrous superhuman operatives that were based on creatures derived from the dark levels of mankind's subconscious. (Weird War Tales v1 #93)

The Commandos were later given broader assignments across the globe. In 1943, the Commandos ventured to the mythical Dinosaur Island in the South Pacific, where they were supposed to solve the disappearance of several Allied spotter planes. They discovered an Japanese naval fleet near the island and were able to turn the dinosaurs on the Japanese ships. Shrieve took pictures for his commanders as proof of the island's existence. However, Taylor destroyed them as he reasoned that the war could only bring destruction to the dinosaurs. (Weird War Tales v1 #100) The Commandos would later returned to Dinosaur Island, they met J.A.K.E., the first G.I. Robot. J.A.K.E. had been left in the ocean after attacking an enemy ship. It was there he met the Commandos when their plane was attacked by a dinosaur and crashed landed. Together, the Commandos and J.A.K.E. discovered a supposed lost colony of Atlantis situated in the Pacific. The lost colony had created a group of robots to carry on the work of Atlantean conquest, and these androids took control of the G.I. Robot's mind. J.A.K.E. ultimately overrode their commands and sacrificed itself to destroy the colony. (Weird War Tales v1 #111) The Commandos soon met J.A.K.E.'s successor J.A.K.E. II, in which, together, they saved a Scottish princess from the blitz and J.A.K.E. II became an official member of the Commandos. (Weird War Tales v1 #115)

At the end of the war, the fate of the Commandos and J.A.K.E. II were supposedly spared from a government-directed death sentence to man a rocket aimed at Berlin. Instead, the rocket went radically off course and headed deep into outer space. (Weird War Tales v1 #124)

Post-Flashpoint

Following the Flashpoint, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events. Division M were the creations of S.H.A.D.E.'s Science Division who created a team of field operatives who preferred to call themselves the Creature Commandos. The team were deployed to assist Frankenstein following an incident at Bone Lake, Washington when an army of monsters began to emerge from the lake. (Frankenstein, Agent of S.H.A.D.E. v1 #1)

Notes

  • The Creature Commandos were created by J. M. DeMatteis and Pat Broderick where they made their first appearance in Weird War Tales v1 #93 (November, 1980).
  • In Comics Interview v1 #38 (1986), writer J. M. DeMatteis commented on the teams creation, "I was doing War Tales[sic] for about six months before the DC implosion put me out of work for almost a year. And the last idea I had... I took a look at the title, Weird War, and I said, "Ya gotta have a lot of monsters." ... then after I was getting work there again was when they were trying to revivify the mystery books by putting series in them. So I went to Len [Wein, editor] with the Creature Commandos - the actual title may have been Len's; I think it was - and he said the same thing. "That's so silly that it will work. Let's do it." And we did it and it was silly and nothing came of it and the book died anyway."
