Biography

Pre-Crisis

Dabney Donovan

Donovan, who had faked his own death, had secretly created monstrous abominations in a hidden, subterranean laboratory beneath Project Cadmus' headquarters. There, he had created and unleashed several genetically altered creatures, including the super-intelligent and genetically modified humanoids known as the 'Hairies', as well as enormous dinosaur-like monsters. Donovan's activities came to a head when his attempt to speed up the mutation process of his creations led to the rampage of the creature Payback. When confronted by his horrified Project Cadmus colleagues, Donovan had faked his own demise, allowing him to continue his unauthorized experiments on genetically modified beings, known as 'DNAliens', in secret. (Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen v1 #142) Having faked his death, Donovan was able to operate with impunity, and his monstrous creations ran rampant through the subterranean. Olsen, while investigating, was taken captive by Donovan's creations, which included two other mad scientists from Apokolips, Simyan and Mokkari. Donovan, still unseen and working from the shadows, was behind the manipulation of Olsen's genes, orchestrating a series of events that temporarily devolved Jimmy into a powerful, savage 'caveman'. This transformation was part of Donovan's ongoing, amoral research, which demonstrated his capacity for cruelty and his complete disregard for human life. His activities, including the creation of a 'Homo-Disastrous' Jimmy Olsen and other menaces, forced Superman, the Guardian, and the Newsboy Legion to intervene to stop the chaos and save Olsen, even as Donovan remained hidden in his lab. (Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen v1 #146) Jimmy Olsen, and the Newsboy Legion confronting one of Donovan's most dangerous creations yet: a powerful, four-armed monster called the 'Four-Armed Terror'. This creature was another product of Donovan's reckless genetic tinkering, bred to consume nuclear radiation and sent rampaging from the subterranean lab. The monster's destructive path led it towards Project Cadmus's atomic power plant, forcing the heroes into a direct and cataclysmic conflict to prevent a wider disaster. (Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen v1 #147)

Post-Crisis

Following the Crisis on Infinite Earths, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events.

Donovan used his cloning expertise in aiding Intergang, creating young bodies for Moxie Mannheim and his henchmen. He created the clones of Moxie's original henchmen Ginny "Torcher" McGee, Mike "Machine" Gun, Noose, and Rough House while giving them superpowers. (Adventures of Superman v1 #550)

He once helped the ailing Lex Luthor clone himself a new body, in the guise of Lex Luthor II, when he was dying of a kryptonite-induced cancer. Lex Luthor tried to kill Donovan to protect his secret, but Donovan, of course, used his talents to create multiple clones of himself. However, Donovan would later get his revenge by helping Luthor's ex-wife Contessa Del Portenza and sending a Bizarro after Luthor. (Superman Forever v1 #1) Donovan caused trouble with a clone plague that would cause clones to deteriorate and die. Luthor, still within his cloned body, sent his forces to battle Cadmus for the cure. Donovan eventually had to kill Cadmus's director Paul Westfield in order to keep his agenda hidden. (Superman v2 #90)

When Mickey Cannon re-established Project Cadmus, Dabney Donovan was brought back under armed guard and made an 'imprisoned advisor'. (Superboy v4 #57)

He even created youthful clone bodies for Moxie Mannheim and his dead henchmen Ginny "Torcher" McCree, Mike "Machine" Gunn, Noose, and Rough House where they also received superpowers. With an older clone of him used as a bomb upon its death during a meeting with the other crime lords, Moxie had Noose kill Vincent Edge while Dabney Donovan makes use of any genetic material that he can salvage from the dead crime lords. (Adventures of Superman v1 #544) He was able to ally himself with Agenda and make illegal super-powered operatives for the immoral organization like Gene-Gnome. (Superboy v4 #74)

Overview

Personality and attributes

In appearance, Dabney Donovan was a male human with a head that was disproportionately large, and he was often depicted with a menacing smirk and wide, staring eyes that conveyed his sociopathic nature. His hair was often shown as unkempt and sparse, further adding to his unsettling aesthetic. He was most frequently seen in the garb of a mad scientist, wearing a lab coat or some form of scientific attire. (Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen v1 #142)

Donovan's personality was defined by a ruthless combination of genius, megalomania, and profound amorality. A brilliant geneticist, Donovan firmly believed that scientific progress should not be constrained by ethical considerations or human rights, viewing such concerns as mere hindrances to his ultimate vision. His complete disregard for the well-being of others was evidenced by his reckless experiments, which resulted in the creation of monstrous and dangerous lifeforms. Donovan's intense superiority complex fueled his ambition, leading him to feign his own death in order to continue his unauthorized research without the interference of his more principled Project Cadmus colleagues. This obsessive drive demonstrated that Donovan's single-minded pursuit of scientific advancement was the overriding purpose of his existence, blinding him to the chaos, destruction, and danger his experiments inflicted upon both his creations and the world at large. (Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen v1 #142)

His abilities allowed him to create a wide variety of genetically altered creatures and humanoids, such as the Hairies, the destructive Payback, and the monstrous Four-Armed Terror. Beyond creating these abominations, he was a skilled manipulator, operating from a hidden "Evil Factory" to pull the strings behind the chaos at Project Cadmus. (Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen v1 #142)
