Biography

Daisuke Jigen (Japanese: 次元 大介, Hepburn: Jigen Daisuke)

Jigen was born to a father who regularly took him to battlefields and was engaged in different criminal transactions. At a very young age, young Jigen had already mastered using guns, started smoking, and preferred using revolvers. He was a student in the school Young Lupin attended to, but was always absent everyday, only appearing rarely. Rather, he spends his time doing underground criminal work, like delivering guns and protecting jewelry. Slowly he had earned a reputation for his skill and professionalism. Things would change as a young Lupin notices him and starts to get interested in being with him. After escaping from a nightclub with young Lupin and a singer named Yoko, young Lupin started being with him more. Young Jigen would repeatedly tell him to go home and enjoy the life of any other rich boy, but it changes as young Lupin finally decides he wants to carve his own path and they both rescue Yoko after she is kidnapped on a ship. After a few more misadventures, young Jigen would eventually enjoy being around with young Lupin and even take part in a lot of his schemes, such as building a secret base in the school. He did not blindly follow through with everything young Lupin planned to do, however, much like what adult Jigen would occasionally do with Lupin when he felt like his favors were too much.

Overview

Personality and attributes

Powers and abilities

Jigen is a master thief and The Lupin Gang's key marksman. He can perform a 0.3-second (sometimes 0.2) quick-draw and has an accuracy that borders on superhuman; he can shoot skeet with a handgun, explode a missile before it hits by targeting the warhead, and deflect another bullet by shooting it in mid-flight. He prefers to conceal his eyes using his hat, as it gives him a more enigmatic appearance; when one or both of his eyes are seen, it is occasionally used to demonstrate surprise or that he’s going to terminate his opponents.

Notes

  • Daisuke Jigen was created by Monkey Punch where he featured in the setting of the Lupin III universe.
  • According to Monkey Punch, Jigen's design was heavily inspired by American gangsters, with a loose basis on James Coburn's performance in The Magnificent Seven. In fact, Kiyoshi Kobayashi, the voice actor who dubs many of Coburn's performances into Japanese, was specifically selected to voice Jigen for the Lupin III animations.
