Biography

Dante (Japanese: ダンテ) was born a male half-demon as the child of the demon Sparda and his human love who was a mortal woman named Eva where he had a win brother named Vergil. The family lived in a remote home near Red Grave City. As young children, Sparda would train the boys and for much of Dante's early childhood, he didn't realize his father was a demon. Sometime before their eighth birthday, Eva gave Dante and Vergil each one half of the Perfect Amulet. Eventually, Sparda died under unknown circumstances, leaving Eva to care for the twins alone. Some time later, they were attacked by demons. Eva was killed, and though both Vergil and Dante survived, the twins were separated, and Dante believed Vergil to have died. Dante followed his mother's last wish and took up a new identity to hide from the demons, adopting the name "Anthony 'Tony' Redgrave". Some years later, he found himself under the care of a woman posing as his mother on Morris Island. He befriended a young boy named Ernest. Tony/Dante and his "mother" were forced to leave when a demon attacked and burned down the town.

One day, he was at his unnamed shop when a man named Arkham came to him with an 'invitation to the Temen-ni-gru on behalf of his brother Vergil; as soon as he leaves, Dante is attacked by a swarm of hell jailers. Dante effortlessly kills them all, and heads to the tower in search of an 'interesting time'. Meanwhile, Vergil speaks to Arkham about his plan to reopen the portal to the demon world and obtain his father's power, in the form of the Force Edge sword that lies there. Within the tower, Dante encounters and defeats the demonic gatekeepers who were sealed away by his father, as well as the demon huntress Lady, who is in pursuit of her father Arkham, and the demon Jester, who guides him through the tower for his own reasons. Upon defeating most of these demons, Dante acquires their souls in the form of new weapons and combat styles. Making his way to the top of Temen-ni-gru where Vergil is, the brothers reunite as they both face off each other in combat. Vergil questions why Dante refuses to gain power from their father, but he denies it as Sparda was never around much for him. But Vergil quickly finishes him off with Yamato, disappointed with what Dante lacks. Vergil steals his amulet and stabs Dante with his own sword when he tries to get up. As Rebellion tastes his blood, it starts a change and Dante's demonic power started to trigger. With this newfound power, Dante continues his pursuit of Vergil, to get even and reclaim his amulet. Dante meets with Lady again to find Arkham dead, revealing to be her father. They have a shootout throughout their conversation. Sharing his family experiences with Lady, she denies what he says and thinks only of him as a demon after shooting him in the head when he saved her from falling. For that, he just left her alone. Meeting up with Vergil, the brothers go for a second round with Vergil wielding the gauntlets and greaves of the vengeful demon Beowulf, who lost his other eye in Dante's fight.

Eventually, Dante, Lady, and Vergil discover that Arkham is Jester, and was using all of them in order to open the portal and acquire the Force Edge for himself, using it as a means to gain Sparda's power and become a god. Dante heads up to the top of the tower again, only to find a desperate and angry Lady in his path. Dante and Lady then began their real gunfight and spares her in the end, making her realize that he's half-demon born from Sparda's lineage. For that, he owed Lady for having him realize what he's fighting for and what it means to be human. Feeling accepted by Lady, she gives him her rocket launcher while in the Demon World, exchanging names. As Dante enters the Demon World, he goes through many labyrinths and portals to get to the place where Force Edge was, only to find Arkham in Sparda's demon form. However, Arkham lacked what Sparda had revealing his own mutated form of a blob. Just when he was almost beaten, Vergil suddenly appeared as the brothers worked together before finishing their business. After defeating Arkham in the Demon World, Vergil and Dante duel for the ownership of the Force Edge and to stop Vergil's dark path for power. At the end of the battle, Dante claims ownership of the Force Edge, while Vergil chooses to remain in the Netherworld. Dante matures considerably as a result of his ordeal, and inspired by Lady's courage and commitment to her own family, he continues his demon-hunting business with a greater sense of purpose. They become partners and he decides to call his shop "Devil May Cry", in reference to what Lady said to comfort him over the loss of his brother Vergil.
