Biography
Delight
First incarnated as Delight, she transformed into Delirium for reasons even Destiny does not know.
She resolved to seek out her lost brother Destruction, an Endless who had abandoned his role and withdrawn from his siblings. She attempted to convince each of her brothers and sisters to aid her quest. Most dismissed her request outright, but Dream eventually agreed to accompany her. Delirium’s actions during this journey highlighted both her vulnerability and her resilience. She struggled to maintain coherence in her thoughts, and at times broke down entirely, retreating into her fractured perceptions of reality. Yet, she pressed forward with surprising determination, following intangible leads and cryptic visions that eventually guided her and Dream to their lost brother.
Overview
Personality and attributes
In appearance, Delirium was a constantly shifting figure, rarely maintaining a single consistent form. In her first appearance, she was depicted as a slim, fragile-looking young woman with brightly colored, mismatched clothing and eyes of different hues—one green, one blue—that sometimes changed without explanation. Her hair shifted colors constantly, sometimes multiple times in a single scene, ranging from vibrant reds and oranges to blues and greens, often fading into multiple shades at once. She bore a whimsical, almost disheveled aesthetic, marked by a childlike or dreamlike quality. This ever-changing form reflected her unstable nature, with her physical features altering unpredictably depending on her mood or state of mind.
She was usually quite short, and thin, and looks no older than a fourteen-year-old human girl. One of her eyes is silver-flecked blue, and the other is green. Her hair changes style and color constantly, as do her clothes. Her shadow never reflects her shape, and is tangible, like velvet. She is said to smell of sweat, late nights, sour wine, and old leather. Her sigil in the galleries of the other Endless is a multicolored, abstract swirl. Her realm is a chaotic, constantly changing mass of colors and strange objects and shapes, and contains a sundial with the inscription tempus frangit (Latin for "time breaks," a twist on the traditional saying tempus fugit, "time flees"). Delirium travels with a "guardian" of sorts, a dog named Barnabas, on indefinite loan from her brother Destruction. At one point Delirium briefly appears as hundreds of colorful fish.
She was depicted as the youngest sibling of the Endless, once known as Delight before she transformed into Delirium. Some great, personal catastrophe that shifted her essence from joy to chaos. As Delirium, she was shown existing in a fractured state of mind, her speech patterns changing erratically and her behavior oscillating between childlike innocence and profound insight. She drifted unpredictably through conversations with her siblings, often appearing nonsensical, but her words occasionally carried deep truths hidden within the chaos.
In personality, Delirium was fragmented, her thoughts scattered across endless tangents. She often spoke in half-sentences, riddles, or contradictions, embodying her namesake. Yet beneath this fractured manner, she retained moments of startling clarity, capable of cutting to the core of profound truths with insight beyond even her siblings. Her personality balanced innocence with haunting wisdom, her demeanor at once playful, mournful, and unpredictable. This instability made her difficult for others to understand or connect with, though her siblings—particularly Dream and Death—displayed genuine care for her, recognizing the depth of her pain and complexity.
Delirium is scatterbrained and easily distracted; she often forgets the thread of her conversations, and comes out with offbeat and seemingly inconsequential observations. Very occasionally she is able, with an effort, to become more controlled in thought and speech, at which point her speech is drawn more neatly and the background fades to near-white. This effort, as she says later, causes her pain. Her speech as Delight in Endless Nights takes the same form, with somewhat orderly lettering and a faint rainbow background. Delirium's personality is often very ecstatic, responding jubilantly to almost any action such as reacting with joy at being held in the mouth of Wyvern the Dragon. Delirium is quick to anger when treated rudely, such as driving a police officer insane for chastising her reckless driving, to threatening to curse Mazikeen into being a half-faced demon madly in love with her boss and making it so, that it has always been like this.
Delirium was closely associated with shifting, surreal imagery. Her realm was a reflection of her nature, a chaotic landscape in which colors, shapes, and forms constantly shifted, defying logic or stability. When other characters entered her space, they were disoriented by its instability, the environment mirroring her own fractured psyche. Despite her confusion and erratic mannerisms, Delirium’s presence often foreshadowed important revelations. She could perceive layers of reality hidden from others, sensing truths beyond the comprehension of mortals and even her siblings. Her words, though difficult to parse, frequently struck at the heart of cosmic mysteries or foreshadowed events yet to unfold.
The other Endless (particularly Death and Destruction) seem to be fond of Delirium, to varying degrees, and protective of her. She in turn is affectionate towards them, particularly Destruction. It is implied in Brief Lives that her relationship with Dream was originally much worse, as she was often frightened of him. Dream in turn regarded his sister as a nuisance, however, the events of Brief Lives change their relationship, as he admits that he likes Delirium and is upset when she is unhappy. Delirium in turn grows affectionate of Dream and desperately tries to save Dream in The Kindly Ones by trying to persuade him to join her on her quest to find Barnabas.
Powers and abilities
In physiology and essence, Delirium was one of the Endless, making her an anthropomorphic personification rather than a mortal being. Her existence transcended human limitations, granting her immortality, conceptual embodiment, and the ability to alter her appearance and reality around her at will. As the manifestation of delirium itself, she could warp perceptions, influence minds, and perceive hidden truths across dimensions. Unlike mortals or gods, her form and powers were symbolic extensions of her domain, existing as long as the concept of delirium endured. Her powers were often subtle, manifesting as distortions of logic, reality, and thought, rather than displays of raw force. (Sandman v2 #21)
Notes
- Delirium was created by Neil Gaiman and Mike Dringenberg where she made her first appearance in Sandman v2 #21 (December, 1990).
- Todd Klein, the series' letterer, draws her speech as letters which do not quite match in height or line up neatly, against a multi-colored background, sometimes the background color will match the mood she is in (red for anger, blue and green for calm, etc.).
