Biography

Derek Hale was a male werewolf born the son of Talia Hale and a member of the Hale family based in Beacon Hills.

When he reached high school, he joined the Beacon Hills Cyclones basketball team. However, when he first came into his powers in adolescence, he had great difficulty learning to control his transformations during full moons, even despite the fact that he was able to maintain control at any other time, nearly exposing himself during a basketball game that happened to fall on a full moon. Talia attempted to train Derek to stay in his human form by using a large bronze coin stamped with a the symbol of the Hale Family, thetriskelion, which she claimed was a powerful talisman for control when used with the mantra, "Alpha, Beta, Omega." Unfortunately, since Derek knew there was nothing actually magical about it, it did little to help him, which led Peter to teach him to use anger, rage, and hatred as an anchor to his humanity, a method which ultimately worked, though it wasn't exactly the healthiest coping mechanism. (Episode: 117)

Derek continued to struggle with controlling his transformations on the full moon, though he refused to let it stop him from playing on the Beacon Hills High School basketball team. Shortly after Paige's death, Derek met Kate Argent, who, unbeknownst to him, was an Argent Werewolf Hunter who initiated a love affair with him in order to gain information that could be used to take out his family. (Episode: 117)

Hale stood in the woods near the Hale House ruins and watched Scott McCall and Stiles Stilinski search for a missing body. He intercepted Scott and tossed back the inhaler the boy had lost the previous night. Later, he appeared in the shadows behind Scott’s house, maintaining a silent presence while Scott struggled with his physical changes. He eventually cornered Scott at the school, where he threw him against a wall and warned him about the dangers of the upcoming full moon. He instructed Scott to stay away from others to prevent a transformation from occurring in public. He then vanished before the authorities or other students could witness the confrontation. (Episode: Wolf Moon) Derek stood among the trees on the edge of the school's lacrosse field and observed Scott McCall during practice. He followed Scott into the locker room, where he grabbed him and demanded to know why he was not staying away from the girl, Allison Argent. He warned Scott that his lack of control put everyone at risk and reiterated that the Argent family consisted of hunters. Later, Derek appeared at the hospital, where he confronted Scott again near the elevators and cautioned him about the scent of the Alpha. He then fled the building through a window just as Chris Argent and other hunters arrived to investigate the premises. He eventually retreated to the ruins of the Hale House, where he encountered Scott once more and revealed the truth about his sister Laura's death. (Episode: Second Chance at First Line)
