History
Devils (Japanese: 悪魔, Hepburn: Akuma or Japanese: デビル, Hepburn: Debiru) were demonic beings that were native to another plane of existence referred to as Hell (地じ獄ごく Jigoku?). Their kind were born as embodiments of the fear of concepts experienced by humanity.
Around 13 years ago, the whole world tried to cash in on guns as a countermeasure against devils. This led to an increase in gun use during crimes and civil revolts. Due to heavy media coverage of gun crimes in every country, worldwide fear of guns has increased drastically. On November 18th, a large terrorist attack involving guns occurred in America, causing that to be the day that the Gun Devil first appeared. The Gun Devil hit Japan for 26 seconds, killing 57,912 people. Aki Hayakawa witnessed the Gun Devil destroying his house and killing his family as it passed by. It hit several countries around the world in succession eventually leading a death toll of 1.2 million lives in only five minutes. Aldo, Joey, and their brother survived the Gun Devil's attack but lost their home along with their father, mother and grandmother. This would be one of the events in their lives that would lead them to believe that they were immortal. After that, the Gun Devil disappeared but its impact on human society led to an overall increase in fear of all Devils. An international law had been prepared to strictly control the manufacturing of arms in every country to lower the fear of guns.
Overview
In appearance, a Devils shape and bodily structure often have to do with the 'name' they embodied. Most Devils possessed human limbs, faces, bones, and other body parts. Devils who are friendly and are more inclined to humans will take on a very humanoid form in the natural state of their incarnation, some being indistinguishable from a human save from some subtle tells. There had still been some non-humanoid Devils who have been friendly towards humans.
Devils primarily feed on the blood and fear of humans, however they can also survive by drinking the blood of other creatures. While fear makes Devils more powerful, consuming blood allows them to quickly heal their injuries as well as grow in power - meaning that consuming humans is more than just instinctual hatred, but often necessary to their survival. For that reason, while Devils and Fiends can also consume other kinds of foods, such as vegetables and fruits, most refuse to live off of them, since it will not heal their wounds or give them more power. It is unclear whether or not their blood is properly nourishing to them, but given consistent remarks that they have a terrible or unusual taste.
Devils do not reproduce as most organisms do, instead simply 'appearing' in Hell. Due to their nature of existence, Devils do not typically have familial relationships. However, there are instances where more powerful devils regard other devils as their children.
It also appeared that Devils were incapable of dying due to old age. Thus, they could live indefinitely until killed by external factors.
Devils could be physically fragmented into Flesh Pieces (肉にく片へん Nikuhen?).
Naturally, most Devils are extremely hostile considering their requirements to feed on the blood and fear of humans. Some, however, were relatively friendly and feed by alternative means. Some Devils choose to form contracts with humans, allowing humans to borrow some of their power in exchange for a sacrifice. Other Devils outright choose to become Devil Hunters, allowing them to live in human society and buy food with the money that they make. As a general guideline, the more human the Devil looks, the more friendly they tend to behave. However it is worth noting that Devils do not have human rights and therefore there is no legal repercussions if they are killed by a human. For that reason, some Devils and Fiends are coerced into helping humans out of fear of dying rather than doing it out of their own free will. Devil Hunters will sometimes capture Devils to use them for contracts. While uncommon, it is possible for a human and a Devil/Fiend to form an emotional bond. In some rare cases it might even develop into a romantic relationship.
According to statistics, 7 out of every 20 Japanese citizens are killed by Devils.
