Biography
Origin
Dinah Laurel Lance
Dr. Hubble sent out signals to outer space from his observatory in Central City. His continued failures led him to switch off the machine, but his last message was garbled and received by an alien from Arcturus. He concluded from the scrambled message that Earth was being overrun with superhumans, and sent his Adaptoids to destroy Earth’s superheroes. The Adaptoids arrived in Central City, where they were confronted by the Flash. Hawkman was observing from the JlofA satellite, and his separation from Thanagar and Hawkwoman made him need a new League adventure, so he hit the JlofA emergency signal. Black Canary and the League responded, and after adapting to an Earth environment the creatures attacked the League and adapted to counter all of their powers before returning to their spaceship. Their master sent out a broadcast to the JlofA, telling them they could either abandon Earth, or face three groups of Adaptoids stationed in Hong Kong, San Francisco and Venice. The heroes saw the Adaptoids as a threat, and confronted them, but left Hawkman behind, feeling his grief for his loss of Thanagar would make him a liability. The battle went against them, and after being infected by the Adapotoids they retreated back to the JlofA satellite. Hawkman left a note saying he’d returned to Thanagar, and they were all steamed at his selfishness. The Adaptoids decided that the entire human race was viral, spreading too fast and destroying the planet Earth. They were no longer satisfied with forcing superheroes to leave Earth, they promised to exterminate the human race to save the planet, and broadcast their intentions on a TV transmission. Batman, Atom, Elongated Man and Green Arrow tried to defeat hem, but were bested and teleported back to the JlofA satellite alongside their fellow beaten Leaguers. The Adaptoids started toppling world governments when Hawkman returned from Thanagar, along with Hawkgirl, and teleported the Adaptoids to their satellite. The League questioned his motivations, but his plan soon became clear. Hawkgirl’s Equalizer Disease that made everyone around her equal gave the JlofA the edge over the aliens, enabling them to defeat the Adaptoids and imprison them on an abandoned planet halfway between Earth and Thanagar. Thwe Adaptoids settled into their new home, building cities and prospering, while Hawkman and Hawkgirl vowed to monitor them. (Justice League of America v1 #119)
Post-Crisis
Following the Crisis on Infinite Earths, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events. Dinah Laurel Lance
Green Arrow and Green Lantern came to the rescue but were defeated by Black Canary and the cult. When Dinah was put in the position to execute her lover Green Arrow, the hypnotic hold broken, and the heroes defeated the white supremacists. (Green Lantern v2 #78) Ashamed of being involved in such a despicable group—albeit against her will—Dinah devoted some of her time to work with the Native Americans on the reservation that Joshua had intended to murder. (Green Lantern v2 #79)
After Green Arrow accidentally killed a man, he abandoned his heroic persona, along with his civilian life in Star City. (The Flash v1 #217) Hal sought Dinah's help to locate their missing friend. Her investigation inadvertently led her to a secret hate gathering, organized by none other than Joshua's sister. She was discovered and outnumbered by the angry mob who threw her off the roof of the building but was fortunately saved by Green Lantern. (The Flash v1 #218) Continuing Black Canary's spate of bad luck, a drugged driver crashed into a phone booth when she was making a call. Badly injured and losing a lot of blood, Hal knew Ollie was one of the few people with her rare blood type that could save her. Hal had heard of the discovery of the Arrowplane wreckage, and from there, soon tracked him down in an isolated monastery. Despite his own shame and his contempt for society, it only took the mention Dinah's predicament to get Ollie to return home. Through a blood transfusion, Oliver saved Dinah's life, and she made a full recovery. (The Flash v1 #219)
After a New Year's party, she came to walk in on Oliver kissing Marianne but before anything could be said their place was attacked by a black-garbed archer. Green Arrow, Black Canary and Shado came to learn that the mysterious assailant was actually a brain-washed Roy Harper who was being controlled by corrupt CIA agent Greg Osborne. He had intended for Queen's protégé to kill his mentor but Oliver took on Roy's costume to confront the mastermind and defeated him. Afterwards, Dinah came to have a talk with Oliver over the recent kiss he shared with Marianne where she commented on how hurt she had been over the fact that she could not give him a child and had refused his marriag proposal. She felt that she simply was not enough for Oliver and could not stand by with sharing his life. Though she loved him, she said she could not be with him and after a kiss the couple broke up. (Green Arrow v2 #75)
Months later, Dinah came to be informed about Oliver's death from his illegitimate child Connor Hawke. (Green Arrow v2 #101)
After a battle with Ra's al Ghul, Oracle urged Dinah to take a dip in the mystical Lazarus Pit. Doing so healed her injuries and restored her Canary Cry, as well as her ability to have a child. (Birds of Prey v1 #34)
Canary and the newly reformed JSA found out why Scarab needed their help. A new Dr. Fate was about to be born, and Mordu was trying to locate and kill the Fate-Child. The JSA were charged with finding the child before Mordu. Canary traveled to Venice with Starman VII and Flash I. They encountered and defeated the Sons of Anubis, but did not find the Fate-Child in Venice. (JSA v1 #2) Mordu abducted the Fate-Child and defeated the JSA, but the battle lasted long enough for the Fate-Child to transform into Dr. Fate and trap Mordu inside his amulet. The JSA returned to their hq and named Sand their first chairman. (JSA v1 #4) Canary returned to JSA Headquarters and found it trashed. Her teammate Wildcat explained that he had a rowdy brawl with the Injustice Society while the JSA was away. (JSA v1 #10)
