Biography

Pre-Crisis

Doctor Destiny was the name adopted by a male human who lived in the modern age where he came to be a criminal mastermind who could invent incredible technology. (Justice League of America v1 #5)

Post-Crisis

Following the Crisis on Infinite Earths, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events. John Dee

He was a petty criminal scientist wielding a blood-red stone called the Materioptikon, but in this instance it is revealed to be one of Dream of the Endless' symbols of office, his ruby, given to him by his mother, former mistress of one of Dream's jailers. Overuse of the stone shriveled him into a decrepit state similar to his Pre-Crisis incarnation, which further worsened when he was incarcerated in Arkham Asylum, where the doctors removed his ability to dream in an attempt to neutralize his dream-based powers. His mother visited him there and gave him a protective amulet, easing his escape. Still, traumatized by the effects of the gemstone on her son, Ethel Cripps committed suicide. Dee escaped Arkham and took a gun from a guard, using it to force a woman to drive him to the stone's location. Upon arriving, he shot the woman dead, finding the ruby and an unconscious Dream. Dee took the gem from the personification of stories and went to a diner to enact his plan to drive the world mad. It turned out that Destiny's manipulation of the stone had altered it, preventing Dream from reclaiming the power within.

Back in his old costume, Doctor Destiny was responsible for capturing Legionnaire Dream Girl who he chained in his cell in Arkham Asylum. He used Dream Girl's nightmares to deal with the asylum guards. When Batman, Sandman, Starman, and Geo-Force arrive at the asylum, Starman goes up against Destiny by himself, but is subdued when Destiny uses Dream Girl's powers to create a zombified version of Kenz Nuhor, the man Starman killed. Starman begs Destiny to let Dream Girl go, and awakens her from her trance by using the "wake-up" word. When she awakens, Dream Girl tells Destiny that she foresaw his death, being killed in his sleep by the owner of the Dreamstone, before she knocks him out. (Justice Society of America v3 #4)

Post-Flashpoint

Following the Flashpoint, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events.

During Forever Evil, Doctor Destiny was among the villains recruited by the Crime Syndicate of America to join the Secret Society of Super Villains. (Forever Evil v1 #1)

Overview

Personality and attributes

He claimed that he was a hermetic philosopher and a scientist. (The Sandman v2 #5)

Powers and abilities

Central to his powers was the Materiopticon that was a device he constructed capable of putting people into a dream state. It was capable of transforming dream images into living beings. (Justice League of America v1 #19)

At one time, he had within his possession the Dreamstone that resembled a ruby but was actually a solid dream that had the ability to control dreams in their raw state. He had said that dreams were actually real but that they were composed of viewpoints, images, memories, puns and lost hopes. Through the ruby, he was able to turn them into matter as it forced them to translate themselves into forms humans would recognise in the real world. John Dee was responsible for building the machines that were powered by the ruby where he coded the circuitry in its clasp. He was said to had changed the Dreamstone's resonance by irradiating it and forced flaws and isolated the original power source within the ruby. The experiments on it resulted in no one else being able to use it except for Doctor Destiny though side effects of its use meant that he lost the ability to dream. In addition, the changes forced on the ruby meant that it actually stole power from its creator Dream who felt himself drained by touching it instead of being empowered by the ruby. (The Sandman v2 #5)
