Biography

Origin

Doctor Ivo Robotnik (Japanese: ロボトニック, Hepburn: Robotonikku?) was a male human who came from a large family of brilliant scientists and geniuses. When he was a child, he never had a chance to meet his cousin, Maria, before she died in the aftermath of Project Shadow. Even then, he would somewhat bear her ill will due to everyone speaking of her when she was gone instead of giving him attention. In contrast, he deeply idolized his grandfather, Professor Gerald Robotnik, because of all of his achievements and accomplishments in his life. This inspired a young Ivo to become a great scientist who would help humanity like his hero did. During his career to fullfil his dream, Robotnik allegedly followed a teaching degree, apparently because he liked telling people what to do, but did not get it for unknown reasons.

At one point, Dr. Robotnik began dreaming of building his own utopic city, dubbed Robotnikland. Also, most likely during this time, his arrogance and immaturity led to him becoming deeply eager to establish power and dominance over the entire world and constantly be at the center of attention, or in other words, have the whole planet under his rule. These factors would eventually make him so obsessed with annexing all of the planet into his own Robotnik Empire that he was utterly convinced by his own twisted beliefs and lack of common sense that the results of a world conquest orchestrated by him would make it a better place and benefit all its inhabitants.

In the past, Dr. Robotnik met the heroic Sonic the Hedgehog and the two became enemies, with the villain facing his new adversary in at least one skirmish before the time of the South Island incident. While very little is known about their conflicts in this period, the doctor would have an intense, mutual hatred towards the hedgehog, who would always thwart all of his plans for world domination with seemingly little effort; and in turn considering him his sworn enemy. At a later point, Sonic also began to mock his nemesis with the nickname 'Eggman' due to his egg-shaped body; Robotnik himself would eventually get so fed up with this name that he would adopt it as his own as a sign of empowerment. However, some sources state that the two adversaries would not meet until the start of the South Island incident.

After returning to his evil ways once again, Dr. Robotnik planned to invade South Island to get the legendary Chaos Emeralds, whose power he sought to exploit to annex the entire world into his Robotnik Empire with his scientific prowess as a stepping stone to build Robotnikland.

IDW

In the past, Eggman met Sonic and the two immediately became enemies, having fought many battles with each other, with the hedgehog inevitably prevailing in the aftermath. Some of Eggman's plots have included trying to take ownership of the Chaos Emeralds and attempting a plot involving the Death Egg. Each time however, Sonic stopped him. At one point, the doctor would attempt to conquer Flicky Island, but his schemes were thwarted. Another plot of the villain's involved the deployment of the Hard Boiled Heavies against Sonic, which also failed. While Eggman created many machines over time, his finest creation was none other than Metal Sonic. One time, Eggman personally repaired him after the robot took a beating from Sonic.

Subsequently, he formulated a plan to retrieve it to use against Sonic and his friends. After realizing the Paradox Prism would take months to dig out normally, Dr. Eggman found an alternative way to gain the gemstone. Eggman set his machine, the Eggcrusher loose on Sonic while hiding away, installing a Power Amplifier inside it. Eggman also released a horde of Badniks in order to keep Sonic's teammates Amy and Knuckles distracted so they wouldn't attack the mech. The Eggcrusher faced Sonic and eventually Tails who joined, where Eggman spoke through it, goading Sonic with insults, angering Sonic into attacking the machine. Using Sonic's speed, Eggman amplified the force of the blow to cause a large energy blast which weakened the bedrock surrounding the Paradox Prism's cavern. Immediately Eggman moved out with Orbot, Cubot, a new mech, and a horde of Badniks to retrieve the gemstone, proclaiming to his minions he would now usher in the new age of the Eggman Empire. To prevent his drilling operations at the top of the mountain being noticed, Eggman used several Caterkillers to generate a fake cloud around the mountain's peak, masking his scheme from outside view.
