Dungeons and Dragons is a pen and paper role playing game. It can also lay claim to being the very first RPG, launcing an entirely new medium of entertainment. It was developed by Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson, who built the rules from tabletop wargaming.

History

Dungeons and Dragons was first published in 1974 by Gary Gygax's company, TSR. Since it's initial release, it has maintained continuous production through various editions. The 4th edition is the most recent ruleset.

  1. Dungeons and Dragons
  2. Advanced Dungeons and Dragons
  3. Advanced Dungeons and Dragons 2nd Edition
  4. Dungeons and Dragons 3rd Edition
  5. Dungeons and Dragons 3.5
  6. Dungeons and Dragons 4th Edition.

Over the years, the game has changed very heavily. The largest changes occurred when Wizards of the Coast purchased TSR. The TSR brand had been experiencing sluggish sales, along with a notable portion of the industry in general. It can not be overlooked that the success of Collectible Card Games, Primarily WotC's Magic: The Gathering was a reason for the lull in RPG publications.

After a brief time, WotC retooled the entire system, instituting a newly updated look, and sweeping modifications to the game's rules. In most cases, the older rules from 2nd edition were entirely unsuited for conversion to the new game.
