Earth Space Defense is a military organization that features in the Independence Day series.

History

Earth Space Defense (ESD) was a military organization founded by the United Nations on Earth in the late 20th century. It was created as a result of the Alien invasion during the War of 1996. At the time, a race of marauding aliens had arrived on Earth who placed vessels above major cities around the planet and began destroying the world. Humanity managed to survive by using a computer virus to knock out the alien mothership that was feeding power to the various destroyers around Earth. As a result, the invasion was defeated and mankind managed to survive where they continued to fight pockets of alien resistance. In the aftermath, humanity had united as a species due to surviving extinction with the United Nations forming Earth Space Defense to protect the planet against a future alien invasion. To achieve this feat, Earth Space Defense was created as a result that began reverse engineering the alien technology.

In 2016, an unknown alien object appeared around Earth's Moon Base during the time of the planet's celebration of defeating the alien invaders. The Moon Base responded by attacking the alien craft after believing it was hostile. However, the craft proved to be unlike the alien invader technology and belonged to another species entirely. At that point, a giant alien harvester ship had arrived in the system and managed to avoid detection where it approached Earth and easily destroyed the Moon Base along with the planetary defense grid. It then proceeded to land on Earth where its sheer mass created its own gravity field that caused catastrophic damage on the planet. After landing, the alien harvester proceeded with its goal of mining the planetary core with the ESD mobilizing to combat the second alien invasion.
