In the land of Mordor, within the great tower Barad-dur, sits the great Eye of Sauron, lidless and wreathed in fire. The Eye's gaze pierces cloud, shadow, earth and flesh. It is constantly seeking the One Ring and watching the enemies of Mordor.

Comments

J.R.R. Tolkien was very vague on the precise nature of the Eye. There are those who believe that the Eye was the form that Sauron chose to take during the War of the Ring for a variety of reasons, including the possibility that Sauron was simply not strong enough to take physical form. There are those who disagree, and feel that the Eye was separate from Sauron- a manifestation of the Dark Lord's will to find the Ring.
