History

The Fairies were a race of humanoid mystical beings who once resided on Earth long ago. During that time, they came to be hunted by Magicians who harvested them for their magic. Driven to the brink of extinction, they came upon a desperate plan to abandon the Earth and seek shelter into another dimension. Several of their kind remained behind to act as distraction whilst the Fairy Queen and the other survivors fled into Fillory. Wielding one of the seven magic keys, they used it to establish the Fairy Realm within that other world. Meanwhile, those remaining members of their kind that remained on Earth were enslaved and both them as well as Magicians came to believe that there were no more Fairies. The enslaved came to birth more of their kind over generations all of whom were born into slavery with the McAllister family being a clan of Magicians who kept them as slaves and traded in them. In the mean time, the free Fairies in Fillory grew to prosper and were feared for their whimsical nature by the people of Fillory.

However, the nature of the Fairy Realm meant that they could not birth more of their kind within that space. Thus, they could not increase their population and they considered attempting to terraform Fillory to be more habitable by their kind.

Upon learning of the Fairies, Queen Margo entreated their ambassador in order to enlist their aid in repairing the Wellspring. Through their ambassador, they said that the payment for this deed was the child of Elliot and Fen.

After the death of Ember, the Fairies conducted an invasion of Fillory that could only be witnessed by its human rulers. Thus, the two monarchs were forced to follow the commands of the Fairy Queen as Fillory was subject to their hostiles occupation.

In reality, they were terraforming Fillory to better suit their needs and to grow their offspring.

Julia Wicker then brought this information to the Fairy Queen who was sceptical about it and believed it was a human trick. However, Fen convinced her that they spoke the truth as she had no reason to help Fairies after what they had done to her.

Upon settling their new home, they came to find that slavers continued to target them with six of their kind going missing.

Overview

In appearance, Fairies were a race of white-skinned humanoids with wings that allowed them to fly in the air. They had incredibly long lifespans with Fairies able to live for hundreds of years. In fact, they were said to be capable of outliving the lifespan of Dwarves. As beings of magic, they did not need to employ complex hand-signs when casting spells and simply could visualise it in their mind whereupon it manifested in the world. The marrow of royal fairies was noted for being particular powerful in terms of magic and was the equivalent of 50 ordinary Fairies.

Typically, Fairies could not be seen by others unless a deal or magical relics were used to make them visible to their eyes.

It was shown that Fairies could be born by planting a certain kind of mushrooms in a carefully cultivated environment. The roots of the mushrooms contained embryos that were to birth a new Fairy.

Special collars could inhibit the use of magic by a Fairy with any spell made by them causing the device to trigger where it killed them.

They were noted for being a whimsical people who made deals in order to enter into their services. In one case, a person requested to be teleported to another world and the Fairies demanded the person's toes as payment for the deed. They were shown as being fond of collecting body parts of other people. A chief aspect of their society was making deals with others with fairy deals said to be unbreakable. Breaking a deal was said to be impossible with their repercussions for breaching the terms of a deal by either party. The importance of honouring a deal was a fundamental aspect of their people with it said that breaking one would mean losing the trust of the people.

The leader of the Fairies held the position of a Queen.

Fairies were known to abduct other people to serve them. They did not see humans as living beings but rather as akin to pets and lower life forms. As such, they could never accept a human being as an equal and were not above casually killing them. It was said that this stemmed from their treatment by human Magicians when they once resided on Earth.

It was shown that they used rabbits as a means of sending messages to other worlds as the animals were easily able to pass the veil between dimensions.

Within Fillory, they dwelt within the Fairy Realm where they called it Castle Whitespire which occupied the same space as its human counterpart but was out of synch with reality. It was actually maintained by one of the magical keys and removing the relic meant it would collapse as a result. The unique nature of this space meant that it could allow the Fairies to birth more of their kind.
