Biography

Pre-Crisis

Beatriz da Costa

She acted quickly when an ecological crisis threatened Brazil, manifesting her mystical powers to produce bursts of green flame. She used this flame both offensively and defensively, surrounding groups of attackers with a ring of fire to halt their advance and creating walls of mystical flame to shield bystanders from harm. Green Fury’s actions during this issue firmly established her as a local protector with powers rooted in a supernatural source. (Super Friends v1 #25)

Post-Crisis

Following the Crisis on Infinite Earths, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events. Beatriz Bonilla da Costa was a female human who grew up around the beaches of Rio. (Secret Origins v2 #33)

As she was growing up, she looked to begin a modelling career and managed to get the attention of Dom Diablo. (Secret Origins v2 #33)

Looking for a new job, she dome some research on career prospects and came to believe that the one suitable for her was with the Espiaos Nacionales de Brasil (E.N.B.) that were the espionage network for Brazil. Mr. Fundo came to serve as her boss where he noted that Beatriz had some impressive credentials. (Secret Origins v2 #33)

One day, she had an assignment where she was to track down Menino Do Diablo who was the son of Dom Diablo. The man was responsible for stealing the agency's pyroplasm equipment and was conducing dangerous experiments with it. Beatriz was then sent to Diablo's estate in the French Riviera where she was to extricate him from the mansion on behalf of his father. She managed to reach his mansion and confronted him but he was focused on continuing his experiments to gain great power. Beatriz destroyed the equipment but it caused an explosion that bombarded waves of pyroplasm energy giving her superpowers. (Secret Origins v2 #33)

Beatriz, now adopting the codename Green Flame, was drawn into a larger conflict where she joined forces with other international heroes. During this encounter, she demonstrated her growing tactical skills by coordinating fiery barrages with precise timing. She scorched incoming projectiles midair and engulfed machinery in her emerald fire, rendering it useless before it could be turned against her allies. Green Flame’s coordination in the heat of battle underscored her willingness to operate on a team, working alongside metahumans beyond her native country. (Infinity, Inc. v1 #32)

Fire fought alongside heroes such as Blue Beetle, Booster Gold, and Martian Manhunter. During a mission against the Royal Flush Gang, Fire unleashed sustained streams of green flame to cut off enemy escape routes, immobilized several foes with blasts of superheated energy, and used her agility to stay mobile in combat. Her actions helped dismantle the gang’s coordinated assault, and she solidified her place on the team as a dependable powerhouse. (Justice League International v1 #14)

Eventually, she once again changes her heroic name, this time to Fire in affinity with Icemaiden's shortening of her name to simply Ice. (Justice League International v1 #19)

In the battle against Doomsday, Bea looses her powers by taxing them to their limits. (Superman v2 #74)

When this League collapses, Beatriz returns to Brazil and tries to re-establish herself as the country's main protector. This meets with varied success, which she blames partly on the Martian Manhunter's prominence in the Southern hemisphere. (Martian Manhunter v2 #10)

She appears later, criticizing Booster for his shameless self-promotion while the search continues for the missing superheroes. (52 v1 #4)

Fire was recruited as part of a massive group of superheroes tasked with hunting down the JLI's founder and Ted Kord's murderer, Maxwell Lord. During an encounter with Max at the Justice League's former New York headquarters, Fire is rendered unconscious alongside Ice, Booster Gold, and Captain Atom. The former Justice League members awake to discover that Lord has used his mental abilities to erase his existence from the minds of every single human on the planet, save for those present at the embassy. (Justice League: Generation Lost v1 #1) After she tries to tell Wonder Woman of her killing of Lord, Wonder Woman refuses to believe it. Fire discovers that Max has mentally influenced the world into believing that Checkmate has dismissed her for failing her psychological evaluation. (Justice League: Generation Lost v1 #2)

Post-Flashpoint

Following the Flashpoint, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events.

Overview

Personality and attributes

In appearance, Beatriz wore a bright green bodysuit adorned with flame designs, emphasizing the mystical source of her powers and her Brazilian heritage. Later, as Green Flame and eventually Fire, her costume evolved into a sleeker green and black design, with high boots and flame accents, better suited for the superhero community of the Justice League. She was consistently depicted with long green hair—sometimes vivid emerald, other times a subtler shade—that symbolized her fiery powers. Her look shifted with the times, but she retained a distinctly vibrant and fiery aesthetic. (Justice League International v1 #14) Her friends were noted to call her by the nickname of B.B. (Secret Origins v2 #33)

Beatriz was portrayed as confident, witty, and outspoken, often serving as a lively and fiery presence among her teammates. She showed a sharp sense of humor, frequently bantering with her close friend Ice, and displayed a certain boldness in both combat and social settings. While her personality carried warmth and charisma, she could also be hot-tempered, especially when confronted with injustice or insults. Her loyalty to Ice and her determination to prove herself within the Justice League defined much of her characterization, as she balanced being a strong independent heroine with being a loyal friend and teammate. (Justice League International v1 #14)

Since childhood, she had a knack for getting into trouble though she had ways of getting out of it. As a child, this was by being cute where she found that adults allowed her to get away with things. During her teenage years, she came to use her beauty to get away from any trouble as men tended to give her a pass. (Secret Origins v2 #33)

Powers and abilities

She was noted to had once worked as a mud wrestler in her youth. (Secret Origins v2 #33)

Originally, she lacked any powers but came to be trained as a spy and secret agent. During that time, the agency provided her with fantastic ray guns that used pyroplasm that was a powerful organic energy source. (Secret Origins v2 #33)

During a mission, her body came to be bombarded by waves of pyroplasm energy which came to absorb its power. (Secret Origins v2 #33)

Fire’s powers originated mystically at first but were later redefined as a result of a pyrokinetic gene bomb, which altered her abilities into a metahuman condition. She possessed the power to generate and control green fire, which she could project as blasts, streams, or defensive barriers. Her flames could incinerate machinery, deflect attacks, and create smokescreens. At full strength, she could transform her entire body into a form of living green flame, allowing her to fly at high speeds and resist physical harm. She also displayed enhanced durability when enveloped in her fiery form, making her a frontline combatant against both metahuman and supernatural threats. (Justice League International v1 #14)
