Firstborn (Space Odyssey)

In the beginning the Firstborn were flesh and blood, and were awed by the wonders of the cosmos. They were also lonely. As soon as they developed powers, they began to seek for fellowship among the stars. In their explorations, they encountered life, and watched the workings of evolution on a thousand worlds. They saw how often the first life-forms died out before they were given the chance to be sentient. So it is in their power to encourage life to evolve.
