Biography

Frederick Foswell, Senior was a male human who was born in the modern age. At some point, he had two children with these being a daughter named Janice Foswell and a son called Frederick Foswell, Junior. (Amazing Spider-Man v5 #13)

His daughter was in Europe at the time where she went to school with the death of her father leading to insurance money that paid for her education. Upon learning of her fathers death, she vowed revenge against Spider-Man who she believed was responsible for his death. (Marvel Team-Up v1 #40) Meanwhile, his son Frederick Foswell, Junior attended his fathers funeral where J. Jonah Jameson vowed that they would make Spider-Man face justice for his part in his fathers death. He came to consider his father innocent and that Spider-Man was the actual criminal but his family was shunned for the Big Man's actions. Despite this, Freddie believed in his fathers innocence and continued to follow the media campaign of Jameson against Spider-Man whilst planning his own revenge against the Wall-Crawler. (Amazing Spider-Man v5 #13)

Foswell begins leading a double life as the Big Man, head of New York's crime and the boss of the notorious Enforcers. Frail and diminutive in stature, Foswell conceals his identity by wearing a mask, oversized coat, and giant platform boots whenever he appears as the Big Man. Although he has a considerable run of success as a crime boss, a confrontation with Spider-Man ends with his Enforcers being apprehended, and shortly afterwards the police deduce his identity and arrest him. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #10) After Foswell serves his sentence, his Daily Bugle boss J. Jonah Jameson rehires him, an act of trust which immediately earns Foswell's gratitude. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #23)

In this guise he secretly followed Peter Parker to see how he got exclusive photos of Spider-Man. He almost found out the secret identity of Spider-Man but was put off the trail when Spider-Man as Parker set up a Spider-Man dummy to swing away while Patch was watching. Later, he helped aid the defeat of the Crime Master. Although it seemed as if he had reformed, he secretly wanted to take over the criminal underworld from the Kingpin. He became the Kingpin's second lieutenant, but when J. Jonah Jameson's life was threatened, he took a bullet and died saving Jameson's life. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #52)
