Biography

Giselle Smith was born on Neptune's moon Triton, where the residents are a result of genetic engineering which allows them to live in an extremely cold environment. However, Gazelle is unique among her species in her ability to speed up her metabolism. When the Legion first met Giselle she was being attacked by a group of teenagers who disliked her because she was different than them Invisible Kid saved Giselle and she in turn helped the Legion against a squad of alien destroyers. She disappeared after the battle, but Invisible Kid had developed a crush on her and tried unsuccessfully to track her down. Giselle later appeared as a member of the United Planets Young Heroes team under the code name Gazelle, though her membership with them was short-lived due to deception. With three other candidates Night Girl, Sizzle and Turtle, Gazelle then tried out for Legion membership and was accepted by a majority vote. Gazelle helped the Legion defeat the Infinity Net on her first major mission with the team.

Next time she appeared, she had become a member of the United Planets Young Heroes, the UP's answer to the Legion - under the code name Gazelle. When the team failed, Gazelle realized she had been wrong about the Legion, and applied for a Legionnaires try-out. Out of four candidates - Gazelle herself, Night Girl, Turtle and Sizzle, Giselle was the only one to be admitted into the Legion core team on a full-time basis. Gazelle joined the Young Heroes only because the U.P. had promised to cure her of her powers, but she was deceived. When the Legion held its own tryouts, she applied and was admitted by majority vote. (Legion of Super-Heroes v5 #48)

Still not having seen Invisible Kid's face (the former having a crush on Giselle), Gazelle was pleasantly surprised by his appearance when they entered and fought the Infinity Net, only for her to discover later that Invisible Kid had faked his avatar's appearance. Ironically, the modified avatar allowed Brainiac 5 to find the modified coding in the Net, and thus seized control of the entire network using the alternations as a focus point. Gazelle later hugged Invisible Kid despite (and possibly thanks to) his attempt to fool her.

Overview

Personality and attributes

Powers and abilities

All Tritonians are the product of genetic engineering which has allowed them to tolerate a colder climate. Giselle, however, was born with genetic anomalies that altered her appearance and gave her further control over her metabolism. Unlike her race, she could also accelerate her metabolism and achieve super-speed and strength.

Gazelle possess the ability to manipulate her metabolism in order to achieve several effects, but most prominently boosts it giving her a substantial degree of super strength and speed. But she is also capable of slowing down her metabolism to such an extent that she enters a state akin to hibernation.

There are drawbacks to having such an enhanced and evolved metabolism. Since her metabolism is so enhanced gazelle puts herself at risk of getting expending her caloric energy too quickly and becoming physically exhausted. She can even faint if she uses her powers for too long.

Like all Legionnaires Gazelle wears legion Flight Ring which gives her the ability to fly. It also has a sophisticated microcomputer inside which allows communication, navigational guidance, a signal device, and much more.

Notes

  • Gazelle was created by Jim Shooter and Francis Manapul where she made her first appearance in Legion of Super-Heroes v5 #37 (February, 2008).
  • According to artist Francis Manapul on the Legion of Substitute Podcasters #51 (2009), Gazelle "was supposed to look human" but lack of communication between him and writer Jim Shooter, caused him to interpret her incorrectly at first.
