Biography

Nezhno Abidemi

Nezhno was sent back to Wakanda and despite being escorted by the queen herself, received a cold reception by the Wakandan people. His doctors, who were under the impression that the X-Men were helping Nezhno with his condition, were especially contentious after seeing that, due to using his powers, he was in far worse shape than before. They applied additional vibranium tattoos and hoped for the best. Nezhno returned to his calm and reclusive life, spending his days meditating and reflecting on his time with the X-Men. One day, a young Wakandan boy named N’Baku approached Nezhno at a cafe. It was the first time someone had spoken to him since he arrived and Nezhno was pleasantly surprised at N’Baku’s friendliness. N’Baku questioned Nezhno about his tattoos and asked why no one spoke to him but before Nezhno could give him a proper answer, his mother frantically called him back to her. As N’Baku sprinted across the street back to his mother, Nezhno jumped in front of the boy and used his tremendous strength to save him from an oncoming semi truck. Despite saving her son’s life, N’Baku’s mother quickly pulled her son away and it was then that Nezhno realized that N’Baku’s mother was none other than his mother as well. Years of separation from Nezhno had not made her any kinder towards him and she coldly rebuffed him, warning him to stay away from N’Baku and herself. While this heartbreaking interaction left Nezhno shaken, he seemed to take some comfort in the knowledge that he had a younger brother who did not fear him. Life as an outsider began to have an effect on Nezhno and he found himself longing for his days at the Xavier Institute for although the students there were a constant annoyance to him, they had accepted him like no one in Wakanda ever had. (X-Men: Divided We Stand v1 #1)

In the aftermath of M-Day, Nezhno was one of the 27 remaining students from the Institute to retain their powers. In response to the increasingly desperate situation that mutants now faced, Emma Frost disbanded all of the former training squads. She decided to select an elite team of New X-Men trainees and organized an all out battle in the Danger Room between the remaining students. Due to the nature of Nezhno's powers, he was exempt from the session. (New X-Men v2 #23)

When the first mutant since M-Day was born, most of the X-Men went looking for her; only students and several members of the team stayed in the Institute. Shortly thereafter it was attacked by an out of control Sentinel Squad O*N*E. Believing that the Sentinels planned to kill them all, Gentle decided to fight at full strength, regardless of the consequences for his health or life. Nezhno fought with the Sentinels on equal terms, but still in the end he was blasted away and lost consciousness. This was nothing more, however, than a calm before the storm because soon he was thrust head first into a life changing battle when the O*N*E Sentinel went rogue and attempted to not only destroy the Xavier Institute but to kill him and his fellow students. Springing into action Nezhno used his power like never before and increased his muscle mass, height, and weight to dangerous degrees. Despite the health risks and being told to stay put by headmaster Scott Summers, he jumped into the fray and may have saved many lives by his intervention. Despite knowing that his life may be forfeit he did his best to halt the Sentinels and was apparently neutralized by one and lay depowered and unconscious on the battlefield. (Uncanny X-Men v1 #493)

Later, he once again used his powers to protect fellow students from Predator X. (New X-Men v2 #46)

Overview

Personality and attributes

In appearance, Nezhno Abidemi was a large, exceptionally tall Afro-Russian teenager who possessed a remarkably thick, powerful, and imposing physical physique. He was completely bald, lacking any facial or body hair, and his broad features were permanently characterized by a serene, stoic, and deeply peaceful countenance that masked his immense physical potential. To regulate the dangerous side effects of his mutation, his dark skin was entirely adorned with intricate, glowing silver tattoos composed of liquid Vibranium, which were surgically bonded into his muscle tissue and webbed symmetrically across his torso, neck, face, and limbs. While residing at the institute, he eschewed the traditional spandex combat uniforms worn by his peers, choosing instead to walk around in basic, practical civilian attire consisting of a simple dark vest left completely open to expose his marked chest, loose-fitting dark trousers, and practical athletic boots. (New X-Men v2 #23)

Powers and abilities

Nezhno Abidemi possessed an extraordinary, transformation-type mutant capability that allowed him to dramatically increase his overall physical size, muscle mass, and bodily density at will. By channeling his internal energies, he could trigger an instantaneous biological expansion that granted him colossal superhuman strength and near-impenetrable durability, enabling his physical strikes to match the power of the world's strongest entities. When this ability was actively deployed, the liquid Vibranium tattoos bonded to his skin automatically reacted to the physical strain, shifting from a muted silver to a brilliant, glowing light-blue coloration to actively absorb the intense kinetic shockwaves produced by his own muscle contractions. This protective machinery was vital to his survival, as his raw power output was so overwhelmingly immense that using his superhuman strength without the stabilizing containment of the metallic markings would cause his internal organs to rupture and fracture his own skeletal structure from within. (New X-Men v2 #23)

When Jean Grey helped to remove these psychological scars it enabled Nezhno to use his powers without any detriment and restored his sense of touch. According to Jean Grey, Gentle was powerful enough to go toe-to-toe with the Hulk if he could just will it. (X-Men: Red v1 #2)

As a result of the emotional scars Nezhno developed from the verbal and physical abuse he endured from his mother, he subconsciously created a mechanism for self-restraint. (X-Men: Red v1 #6)

He was cured of these handicaps by Jean Grey after she determined their psychological roots. (X-Men: Red v1 #6)

Nezhno has tattoos all over his body, which were adapted from molten raw vibranium, using an ancient Wakandan technique developed to alleviate seizures and tremors. Usually tattoos were temporary, however, Gentle's mutation caused vibranium to bond with his flesh down into the muscle. (X-Men: Divided We Stand v1 #1)
