The 'Genus are a species of extraterrestrial lifeforms that feature in the movie Evolution.

Background

The Genus came to the planet Earth on a meteor as primordial soup. Shortly after arriving on the planet, the creatures evolved from simple microbes into more complex lifeforms such as plants, insects and eventually evolved into primitive animals. Initially, the lifeforms were incapable of breathing an oxygen rich environment but due to their rapid evolutionary pace, they eventually began to move beyond their underground environment. Eventually, the Genus species would have overrun the native Human life and the US military decided to use napalm to destroy the developing species.

Unknown to the military, the Genus actually thrived in a hot environment which caused them to rapidly evolve once again. The excess energy caused a startling evolutionary change where the Genus organisms began to consume the ecosystem it formed in order to create a massive bacterial organism that caused a wave of destruction on the surface. As the creature was about to engage in cellular reproduction, it was killed by a team of scientists that used a compound that was toxic to the Genus's biology.

Despite the death of the large macro-organism, the Genus actually survived and began numerous infestations around the world each of which were thwarted. When the Genus developed into a sufficient mass, they would develop a manifestation of their collective form into a single entity known as Scopes.
