History

These devices were one of the methods to travel to parallel worlds alongside Einstein-Rosen bridges and quantum mirrors. At some point in the past, S.W.O.R.D. had encountered and became aware of the existence of the Ghost Box technology. During their time, they had encountered a number of Ghost Boxes over the years. They determined that maybe twenty alternate worlds had developed Ghost Boxes. (Astonishing X-Men v3 #27)

After acquiring it, the X-Men were unaware as to the nature of the device and decided to consult Abigail Brand and S.W.O.R.D. (Astonishing X-Men v3 #27)

Madison Jeffries of the X-Club along with his comrades managed to rebuild the Ghost Box in the care of the X-Men at Utopia. Alison Blaire was called to the laboratory in order to help power the device. When she did, a portal opened bringing forth alternate world counterparts of Wolverine, Nightcrawler and Emma Frost that were being attacked by a many tentacle creature. Dazzler was dragged through the portal with these three parallel universe versions of people she knew and confronted an alternate version of Charles Xavier who in this world was a giant tentacle monster.
