Gilbert Horner
Professor Gilbert Horner was an archaeologist who was excavating the barrow of the Devil's Hump in the town of Devil's End. Local medium Olive Hawthorne attempted repeatedly to warn him of the dangers involved, but the skeptical professor refused to heed her warnings, intending to open the barrow on live television. When he and Jo Grant arrived in Devil's End, the Doctor noticed what Horner was doing, and raced to stop him. He was too late.
The moment Horner broke the seal, a sudden gust of freezing cold air rushed out from the chamber beyond and engulfed both of them, freezing them solid. Their bodies were taken to the Cloven Hoof. Although the Doctor survived due to his Time Lord physiology, Horner died from being encased in ice. He was pronounced dead by Dr. Reeves.
