History

Gilneas was a human kingdom that was established in the world of Azeroth. Its founding was traced to the time of the empire of Arathor after its victory in the war against the Trolls. This saw the human kingdom entering a period of prosperity and growth until the death of King Thoradin. In that time, it experienced a new period of growth with new city-states being founded in the wilderness with Gilneas being made during this expansion. Each of these cities began to grow and prosper with Gilneas along with Alterac both developing strong armies as they explored the world. Over time, the power of Gilnas and the other city-states grew till they eventually developed their own customs as well as beliefs. Thus, when Arathor splintered these city-states came to form seven independent human kingdoms that dominated the land of Lordaeron. Under the rule of King Archibald Greymane, the kingdom came to thrive and grew into being a formidable middle-power that rivalled that of Kul Tiras and Stromgarde.

Despite the impending Orcish invasion, Gilneas remained a separate from the Alliance of Lordaeron. Genn Greymane was convinced that his people's own armies were capable of dealing with any threat to them. Thus, he was unmoved by the pleas of Lord Lothar for unity among the human kingdoms. Though having a disdain for the Alliance, the Gilneans had no fondness for the Orcs or their allies with them prepared to match blades against this foe.

Years later, while the Alliance of Lordaeron was unaware of the death cults forming in their lands before, the departure of Quel'Thalas who stated that the humans' poor leadership had led to the burning of their forests during the Second War, alongside the liberation of the Orcs from internment camps by Thrall, led to the departure of Gilneas and its military from the Alliance. After the war, King Greymane ordered the construction of Greymane Wall that was a massive barrier spanning the entire northern border. This structure came to barricade Gilneas from the rest of Lordaeron for around 2 decades. This was an attempt to forever remove his nation from what he considered 'other people's troubles'. The construction of the Wall was completed prior to the Third War. Despite managing to isolate his kingdom, King Greymane had other worries on his mind. At the time of the Scourging of Lordaeron, he barricaded the majority of Gilneas behind the Wall and closed off the nation from the rest of the world. As the Undead Scourge had devastated Gilneas' neighbors and not long after were outside the Wall, no one, not even other humans were allowed to enter the kingdom, King Greymane even refusing to help Lordaeron, who weeks before had begged Gilneas for help. The lands of Lord Darius Crowley including Pyrewood and Ambermill were notably separated from their liege and nation by the Wall, having no choice but to survive on their own. The Greymane Wall even remained closed to human refugees begging to be allowed in during and after the Scourge's invasion of Lordaeron. The status of Gilneas became unclear to the outside world. At the peak of their strength, the Scourge relentlessly assaulted the Greymane Wall and threatened to devour all Gilneas. Their number was small at first, but it increased over time and they did not flag. King Greymane's armies held the wall for days against a massive sea of undead hordes, but for every undead that fell, another took its place. Fearing it would break, King Genn Greymane opened the gate and Gilnean soldiers poured from Gilneas into Silverpine Forest. The Scourge, however, defeated the soldiers and raised them into undeath.
