Biography

Gintoki Sakata (Japanese: 坂田 銀時, Hepburn: Sakata Gintoki)

He gained the nickname "Corpse Eating Demon" from the nearby villagers due to being commonly seen wandering in deserted battlefields searching corpses for food and weapons to survive. During one search, Gintoki encounters Yoshida Shouyou who had heard the rumors about the child and came to investigate. Taking a liking to Gintoki and seeing himself in the child, Shouyou gave Gintoki his sword and asked him to follow him. Gintoki became Shouyou's first student at his newly opened school, Shoka Sonjuku, where he learned basic swordsmanship and academics. After gathering more students, all mostly poor, the school earns the attention and scrutiny of the wealthier people in the village. They also gained the attention of two military academic students who became disillusioned with the academy and the people attending it, Katsura Kotarou and Takasugi Shinsuke. The two were attracted by the school's goal for the children, striving to achieve their own ideal of a samurai while struggling against themselves. The two will later officially join after helping fend off some officials from trying to arrest Shouyou. Gintoki later earns himself a rival in Takasugi.

Years later during the Kansei Purge, despite Gintoki's best efforts to stop them, the Tenshouin Naraku arrested Shouyou and burned down the school. Before leaving, Shouyou asked Gintoki to protect his fellow students, as a promise, to which Gintoki mentally agreed. After learning what happened, the students decided to join the ongoing Joui War, allied with the Joui, to rescue their imprisoned teacher. They met Sakamoto Tatsuma during the fight and Gintoki gains the nickname Shiroyasha ("White Yaksha") due to his mostly white attire, silver hair, and of course, his ferocious fighting style. At one point, Takasugi asked Gintoki to protect Shouyou in his stead, though Gintoki never truly agreed and instead asked Takasugi for a promise: to stay alive. During a battle, after Sakamoto was taken off the front lines due to injury, everyone except Gintoki, Katsura, and Takasugi was killed, and the trio was captured. Gintoki was forced to choose between killing Shouyou to save Katsura and Takasugi and vice versa. He decided to keep his promise to Shouyou and protect his friends, but in turn 'broke' his promise to Takasugi. Shouyou gives Gintoki a final 'thank you' before he is beheaded by him. After their enemies left, the trio buried their teacher's head and their comrades' corpses, then went their separate ways, leaving the war. Sakamoto was only able to find Gintoki before he too, left.

The Yorozuya was asked by a client to find his missing daughter, Kimiko. During the search, they eventually found their way into a shady night club filled with Amanto. In the bathroom of the club, Gintoki bumped into Daraku and Kimiko, while the Harusame was trying to get rid of her because of her addiction to a drug called Tenseikyou (Translation: "Paradise"). He tried to protect Kimiko from them, but due to the shock of seeing Kagura and Shinpachi being taken away by them, Gintoki was caught off guard and impaled in the shoulder by Daraku. The impact caused both him and Kimiko to break and fall out of the window behind them, and both were knocked unconscious. In his unconscious state, Gintoki had a dream of carrying a dying body through a field of corpses, and he heard a voice from one of the dead bodies telling him to drop who he was carrying, saying that he could not save him and that he ultimately does not have what it takes to rescue anyone, nor protect anyone when it really matters. The corpse calls him reckless and uncaring, only swinging his sword at what was in front of him, not protecting anyone. He was also called powerless in an attempt to coax him into just dropping everything namely those who were closest to him, and 'taking the easy road', which he wordlessly declines, and is shocked to find the body he is carrying is also a dead corpse. He then awakens. This dream is likely influenced by his subconscious telling him that he is not good enough, and was triggered by his inability to save Kimiko, Shinpachi, and Kagura. After awakening, it is revealed that Gintoki and Kimiko were both saved by Katsura, who informs him of the drug afflicting Himeko and also tells him about the Harusame, and warns him to not try and go after them in his bad condition. Instead of heeding the warning, he insists on saving Shinpachi and Kagura, and, convinced by his desire to protect the two and as well as the fact that he owed Gintoki, Katsura later agreed to go with him. Disguised as "Space Captains", they attacked the Harusame's ship. As Katsura bombed their storage to destroy the drug, Gintoki fought and knocked out Daraku and carried Shinpachi and Kagura home.

Gintoki Sakata entered a small restaurant and ordered a chocolate parfait, only to have his peaceful meal interrupted when a group of Amanto officials harassed the young waiter, Shinpachi Shimura. He remained seated and seemingly indifferent until one of the aliens spilled his parfait, at which point he stood up and struck the official with a wooden sword. He moved with sudden, surprising speed to disarm the remaining guards and tossed them out of the shop, all while complaining about the loss of his dessert. After the scuffle, he casually walked away from the scene, leaving Shinpachi to face the consequences of the property damage. He later reappeared to save Shinpachi's sister from a gang of kidnappers, using his wooden blade to shatter their weapons and take down their leader with a single, decisive blow. He finished the encounter by reclaiming his lost dignity through a series of blunt, deadpan remarks before disappearing into the city streets. Gintoki Sakata wandered into a pet shop looking for a way to pay his rent and encountered Shinpachi once again, who had been fired from his previous job. He ignored the boy’s protests and dragged him along on a freelance job to find a lost 'pet' belonging to an influential Amanto prince. When the creature turned out to be a massive, man-eating alien beast named Pesu, he attempted to flee immediately but ended up caught in the middle of a chaotic chase through the city. He eventually stood his ground when the monster threatened the civilian population, using his wooden sword to deliver a powerful overhead strike that knocked the creature unconscious. Despite successfully neutralizing the threat, he inadvertently caused the prince’s royal carriage to explode during the struggle. He finished the encounter by fleeing the scene at top speed to avoid being arrested by the authorities, leaving Shinpachi to deal with the angry royal guards. Gintoki Sakata encountered a young girl named Kagura while she was fleeing from a group of yakuza members who had been using her superhuman strength for their criminal activities. He initially attempted to ignore the situation and continue riding his scooter, but he accidentally crashed into her, leading to a frantic confrontation where he tried to avoid getting involved in her troubles. After witnessing the yakuza's cruel treatment of the girl, he changed his mind and used his wooden sword to single-handedly dismantle the gang's headquarters. He moved with blurred speed, knocking out multiple henchmen and eventually destroying their getaway vehicle with a well-placed strike. Following the skirmish, he reluctantly allowed Kagura to join his 'Odd Jobs' business after she forced her way into his life by eating all of his food and declaring herself his new employee.
