A Global was a small Human made device that came into use after first contact occurred with the Taelons. Global technology emerged as a direct result of the Taelon arrival and the rapid advancement they brought to human civilization. The Taelons, an advanced alien species calling themselves the 'Companions', came to Earth ostensibly in peace and offered their scientific knowledge in exchange for cultural integration and mutual cooperation. Among the many technologies they introduced, the Global was one of the most influential and transformative. It was developed as a hybrid device—part Taelon design and part adapted by human scientists working within the Companion-run institutions like the Companion Technology Institutes. The idea was to create a universal communication and utility device that could bridge the gap between Taelon and human systems, operating seamlessly across their respective networks. The Globals became standard-issue equipment for Companion agents, field operatives, and other personnel who interacted closely with the Taelons. Their development marked the end of conventional mobile technology on Earth, replacing cellular phones, personal digital assistants, and other outdated tools.
The advanced mobile communications and scanning device known as a Global, or Global Link, was deployed as the primary operational asset by Companion Protectors and municipal law enforcement agencies across Earth. Following his appointment to the security detail of the Taelon Companion Da'an, Captain William Boone utilized the handheld device's integrated communication arrays to maintain instant tactical synchronization with his command center. During a complex investigation into an assassination plot against the alien delegation, Boone used the item's live audio and data feed to track an unauthorized intruder within a corporate compound, logging localized environmental telemetry before the suspect bypassed security grid perimeters to escape into the city. (Episode: Decision) The specialized surveillance and diagnostic matrices of the portable device were leveraged by Captain William Boone following the assassination of his wife, Kate. Seeking to isolate the physical culprit behind the crime, Boone commissioned the absolute technical support of a covert resistance hacker named Augur. Augur connected the Global directly into a specialized, high-yield computer terminal to bypass municipal security networks. The device's data-siphoning arrays successfully extracted encrypted audio logs and sub-surface surveillance footage, which allowed Boone to identify an assassin named Judson Corr, though the processed telemetry concurrently revealed that the murder had been masterminded by Boone’s fellow Protector, Agent Ronald Sandoval. Overview
In appearance, the Global was a compact, hand-held device, designed to be cradled in one palm and operated with the fingers of the same or opposite hand. It featured a distinctive, organic aesthetic common to Taelon technology—smooth curves, a metallic-silver or dark alloy shell, and no visible screws or mechanical seams. The top half of the Global housed a small, transparent, oval-shaped screen which could display a holographic interface or transmission, often projecting a full 3D image of a contact’s face or surroundings. Along the sides or lower portion, subtle touch-sensitive areas replaced traditional buttons, allowing the user to activate communication, scan objects, or access stored data with swiping or tapping gestures. When active, the Global emitted a soft, blue or white glow, particularly around the edges of the screen or through energy conduits embedded within its surface. Its size was roughly comparable to a modern smartphone, but its design was more ergonomic, molded to fit naturally into the contours of the human hand. Despite its compactness, the device gave the impression of incredible power and precision, a blend of utility and art that reflected Taelon craftsmanship.
On the most basic level, the Global functioned as a multi-purpose communications and control device. It enabled secure, real-time voice and visual contact with other users regardless of distance, linking to Taelon satellites and human networks alike. It acted as a personal identification system, a data retrieval tool, and a command interface for other Taelon-enhanced technologies, allowing its user to interact with both human and alien systems in the field. Globals also served as encrypted messaging platforms, portable databases, and in some models, biometric scanners or surveillance monitors. Its core utility lay in its ability to seamlessly integrate multiple technological functions into a single, hand-held device—placing considerable control in the palm of operatives, scientists, and enforcers aligned with the Taelons. While its more specialized functions varied based on user clearance or embedded programming, all Globals shared these foundational traits as the essential tool in a world reshaped by alien contact.
When first introduced, it was used primarily by law enforcement officers and Companion protectors, although it later became commonplace amongst the general population. Globals runs on the MCI network.
