Biography

Origin

The Great Darkness

According to it, the darkness lived before the emergence of the light and its existence was endless where it lived without need for a name. Then came the light leading to the darkness gaining its first sense of self. (Swamp Thing v2 #50)

The Primordial Darkness soon gained consciousness. Several heroes tried to battle it, but they were easily defeated and drawn into its almost infinite being. The encounters taught the Darkness a great deal. Etrigan told the Darkness that it was Evil, Dr. Fate explained that Evil was despicable, and the Spectre taught it revenge. All the encounters only served to further strengthen the Darkness and point its aggression towards Heaven. Finally, Swamp Thing entered the Darkness, and tried to explain his theory of evil—that good and evil define each other and that one cannot exist without its counterpart. The Darkness then reached its hand towards Heaven, and to the surprise of everyone, the Light reached out His hand as well. The two of them embraced. The world was never the same again. Good and Evil would still exist, but Light and Dark would remain locked in a truce, a truce supposedly contingent on the multiverse remaining limited to a single world. (Swamp Thing v2 #50)

Post-Flashpoint

The Great Darkness in Dark Crisis v1 #1.

Following the Flashpoint, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events. The Great Darkness

As the source of selfish impulse, Anti-Monitor himself was, in a way, under the influence of the Great Darkness. (Justice League Incarnate v1 #4)

The Great Darkness was called at Wintergate with Zatara dying as a result of the encounter. (Justice League Dark v2 #10)

Personality and attributes

Upon it gaining a sense of self, the Great Darkness sought to identify itself and thus posed this question to others. Those that referred to it as evil taught it various things such as fatalism or hate with it rejecting these words as it continued to find its identity. (Swamp Thing v2 #50)

It was said that the Great Darkness was a big fan of David Bowie. (Dark Crisis: The Deadly Green v1 #1)

Television

  • In Constantine, a reference was made to the Great Darkness in the setting of the NBC live-action television series. In this setting, an entity known as the Rising Darkness was stated as the main antagonist in the live-action television series. Its not known whether the Rising Darkness was the same as the Great Darkness. The Brujería plan to unleash an ancient evil known as the Rising Darkness to the human realm. According to Papa Midnite, this darkness will be unleashed when someone very close to Constantine betrays him in the future. At the end of the last episode, "Waiting for the Man", Manny releases Midnite from police custody and reveals that the Brujería works for him, which makes Manny the real mastermind behind the event of the story.
