Greg Sutton was a drilling expert who'd worked on numerous oil rigs. He was summoned to act as an advisor on the Inferno Project by Sir Keith Gold. He clashed numerous times with Professor Stahlman and his assistant Petra Williams, although he eventually developed an attraction to Petra, and she to him. All of Sutton's efforts to persuade Stahlman to act more cautiously where Inferno's drill was concerned proved totally fruitless, and Sutton sensed disaster.

When Inferno was reaching penetration zero and it seemed as it Stahlman's recklessness would destroy the entire facility, Sutton showcased a slightly cowardly inclination and debated fleeing, and tried and failed to persuade Petra to come with him. However, she chose to remain. After thinking about it, so did Sutton, and he proved invaluable in the scientists' efforts to try and contain the disaster Stahlman was creating. When Stahlman transformed into a vicious Primord and had to be subdued by the Doctor, Sir Keith ordered the drill shut down before it penetrated the Earth's crust, saving them all. Afterwards, he drove Petra to London.

Alternate Universe

Greg Sutton in the alternate universe.

Sutton was very similar to his counterpart in terms of personality and behavior up to a point. He clashed with Assistant Director Petra Williams but eventually became attracted to her. Inherently anti-authoritarian, Sutton refused to tow the party line and had nothing but contempt for the Republic and its army of jackbooted thugs. He considered Director Stahlman a fool and thought the other scientists made a "tin god" of him.

When Inferno reached penetration zero despite repeated failed attempts by the Doctor to prevent it, it Earth-shattering forces of energy which threatened to destroy the entire planet. Sutton saved the Doctor's life by preventing Brigade Leader Lethbridge-Stewart from shooting him. Unlike his counterpart in the Doctor's universe, Sutton didn't advocate running away, because he knew that the Earth was doomed and there was nowhere to run to.

He and Petra both agreed to help the Doctor get back to his own universe, as did the Brigade Leader and Section Leader Shaw. He accepted both his own impending death as well as the fact the Doctor couldn't take anyone with him.

Sutton's role in helping the Doctor was mainly to act as a bodyguard for the Time Lord, assisting him in fending off Primords and getting to the shed where the TARDIS' control panel was being stored. After this, Petra, Shaw and the Brigade Leader, who restoring power to the shed at the power station. Sutton ended up saving Petra from an attacking Stahlman before she was able to restore power to the TARDIS. Shaw had to kill the Brigade Leader when he couldn't accept that the Doctor couldn't take them with him and attempted to shoot the Time Lord.

As the Doctor, the TARDIS and Bessie dematerialized and returned to their own universe, Sutton, Petra and Shaw were abandoned to their fate and consumed in a wall of molten lava which flowed over the building as the world was destroyed.
