History
The Gremory Clan were a family of devils under the Great Arch-Duke Gremory and stood alongside 72 Pillars that were the other demonic lineages. These devils fought in a great war against Heavenly Angels and Fallen Angels that devastated all sides which left no victor though no defeated. However, among the demon clans, the majority of the families were destroyed in the process leaving only 33 survivors. House Gremory were one of the survivors alongside many more, some being the Phenex and Sitri clans of devils. With their ranks depleted, the devils were allowed to populate their ranks with humans that were turned into devils. In addition, the Ratings Game was established as the primary means through which devils could ascend in status and rank.
At some point, leadership of the clan was passed to Sirzechs Lucifer who was famous among the devils for his single handed approach in saving their kind from destruction. In order to further the family, the leaders of the Gremory clan arranged a marriage between Rias Gremory with Riser Phenex of the Phenex Clan. Such a move would have greatly benefited both family lines with Rias's father and brother agreeing to this move. However, Rias herself did not desire to marry Riser Phenex and wanted to choose her own husband leading to her opposition to this move. At some point later, the Archduke sent note to his clan that a stray devil had slain her master and was on the rampage leading to Rias gathering her allies in order to take down the rogue demon. Afterwards, Riser Phenex met with Rias Gremory in order to prepare for their wedding but Rias refused to marry someone she did not love. An intervention by Issei led to increased hostilities until it was decided that a Ratings Game would be used to settle the difference. As a result, the game was set for ten days in order to allow the members of the Occult Research Group who followed Rias to prepare for the competition. Despite putting up a fight, Rias was defeated by Riser Phenex where she was forced to admit defeat in order to save Issei's life. An engagement took place in the underworld between the pair but this was stopped by Issei who managed to defeat Riser Phenex with Rias being free from the marriage where she expressed her love to he savior.
Overview
In appearance, the Gremory Clan were a family of demons who existed in the world. Similar to the other families, the clan consisted originally of pure blood devils. However, following the devastating war, they were allowed to induct humans into their ranks as devils.
In terms of operation, the members of the Gremory Clan were similar to the other families in that they patterned themselves after playing pieces in chess with these being known as Evil Pieces. Rias herself would act as the King whilst others depending on status and power were divided among the other pieces. Warriors were placed as Knights whilst those with great strength become Rooks and her second in command was the Queen. Other ranks included the Bishop that was given to clerics who were healers and standard warriors were Pawns. Each devil in the household once they reached sufficient ranking were allowed a familiar. Such creatures needed to be sought out with a mystical forest where a guide led the devil to prospective familiars. These beasts needed to accept their master whereby a pact was made linking it in servitude to its master. Familiars came in a variety of forms ranging from Undine water sprites to dragons with some able to take a human form. Humans were sometimes inducted into Gremory's ranks by a pact with the leading member of the family who not only saved the person but turned into a devil. Such devils were creatures of hell and thus could not survive divine aspects from God. These included prayers that could hurt them or feeling dread from the presence of an angel or being vulnerable to an angelic spear of light. Spears of light were toxic to a devil with attacks deeply wounding the devil in question and inflicting a great deal of harm on them.
There were a number of ways through which a devil could rise in prestige with the first being doing Contracting whereby they accomplished devil Jobs with clients by fulfilling their wishes. The accomplishment of the task led to the devil being given a Pact that raised their prestige. Another method was through combat with higher ranked devils, angels or fallen angels with victory raising the individuals ranking.
During competitions with other families, the family were known to participate in Rating Games. These were competitions between clans though only more established older and pure devil families took part in it regularly. Such games were sometimes used as a means of resolving disputes between two devils. This was the final means through which a devil could rise in rank and stature. As part of the games, an alternate space was created specifically for the competition which could resemble anything and can be replicas of the real world. Such sites were created for the Ratings Game and could be razed to the ground if need be by the contestants.
Their home was the Gremory Castle that had an underground storage area for their treasures.
