Biography

The Guilt Hulk was an alternate persona that resided in the mind of Bruce Banner following his transformation into the Hulk. (Incredible Hulk v2 #12)

Doc Samson later employed the Ringmaster's expertise with hypnosis in an attempt to unify Banner's fractured mental state. This allows Banner to experience aspects of his own mind, including childhood memories, from both an objective and participatory viewpoint. During these hypnosis sessions, Banner interacts with his warring split personalities, the Savage Hulk and Joe Fixit. The Guilt Hulk interferes with the treatment, tormenting Bruce and the Hulks by replacing Bruce's abusive father Brian in traumatic memories. By confronting the source of his mental illness, Banner is able to banish the Guilt Hulk, and cause the emergence of the Professor, a more stable personality initially assumed to be a fusion of Banner, the Savage Hulk, and Fixit. (Incredible Hulk v1 #377)

Years later, Banner came to be dying of Lou Gehrig's Disease though this was prevented by the Hulk. By this point, the dying Bruce felt guilt over the death of Betty Ross with this empowering the Guilt Hulk, With his declining mental state, Bruce's mind came to chain the alternate personalities in his mind. This resulted in the Guilt Hulk being freed where he looked to take over Banner entirely. Struggling with himself, Banner looked to seek out the help of his old girlfriend Angela Lipscombe who was a neuro-scientist. She suggested delving into his mind and that he was experiencing another personality in his mind. At first, Bruce refused as he feared what a confrontation with this persona would entail but ultimately relented in the hope of resolving the matter. (Incredible Hulk v2 #12)
