H'ronmeer's Curse
The contagion utilized the Martians' innate telepathic abilities as a vector, spreading instantaneously through their collective 'Great Mind' whenever individuals attempted to share thoughts or emotions. This biological and psionic infection triggered a psychosomatic response that caused the physical bodies of the infected to erupt in spontaneous, uncontrollable flames. The plague exploited the Martians' deep-seated ancestral fear of fire, turning their own mental energy into a thermal catalyst that incinerated them from the inside out. J'onn J'onzz relived the moments his wife, M'yri'ah, and daughter, K'hym, succumbed to these internal fires while they reached out to him for comfort. The virus effectively scoured the planet of life, leaving behind a world of scorched bone and psychic echoes, as the very act of grieving for the dying only accelerated the transmission of the fire to the survivors. This cycle of combustion continued until J'onn remained the sole repository of his race's memories, spared only because his physical form was torn from the Martian atmosphere by Dr. Erdel's teleportation beam at the height of the outbreak. (Martian Manhunter v1 #4)
The Martian Manhunter experienced a series of violent hallucinations and physical distress caused by a sentient alien fungus. During a mission in Gotham City, the telepath was interrupted by visions of a monstrous black demon, leading him to lash out blindly and eventually flee from Batman into the Batcave. (Martian Manhunter v1 #1) J'onnz influence of the affliction manifested through severe psychosomatic trauma and violent hallucinations that shattered the protagonist's grip on reality. Driven by a feverish delirium, he manifested a monstrous, distorted physical form and lashed out at Batman within the confines of the Batcave, perceiving his ally as a demonic threat. His actions became erratic and governed by a deep-seated ancestral terror, as he experienced the sensation of internal combustion and the mental screams of his deceased kin. This state of psychic instability forced him to flee into the Gotham sewers, where he huddled in isolation, unable to distinguish between his current surroundings and the scorched landscapes of his memory. He suffered from debilitating physical weakness and a total loss of emotional control, eventually collapsing under the weight of a perceived 'death-fire' that seemed to burn him from within. (Martian Manhunter v1 #2)
During a telepathic communion between J'onn J'onzz and the entity H'ronmeer, the true nature of the extinction-level event on Mars manifested as a psychic plague. (Martian Manhunter v1 #4)
