Biography

William Hayes was an orphan boy adopted by Burt and Ellen Hayes and their young daughter, Greta. Despite being raised in a wonderful environment with two loving parents and a sister who adored him, Billy concealed dark sociopathic tendencies and his overwhelming ambition: to become the Greatest Supervillain of All Time. When he was first adopted, Greta saw prophetic visions of his evil nature, but was calmed when Billy swore to protect her from the bad things of the world. However, Billy displayed signs of violence as a child. When he was 11, he sliced Burt's neck with a knife, missing his jugular by an inch.

He began cataloging information of superheroes and their weaknesses into his own "Book of Blood" and searching for a way to acquire superpowers of his own. When Billy entered his teenage years, he was approached by the demon Buzz, who offered him immense power. He ultimately succeeded by contacting the demon Buzz and he would kill his own sister, Greta in demonic bargain to gain power in exchange. Unknowingly, he condemned Greta to become Secret; as her soul was too pure to be cast into Hell and yet due to the manner of her death in a demonic ritual, Greta was unable to pass into Heaven. To gain this power, Billy put on tribal face paint and sacrificed Greta by dropping a tape-deck into her bathtub. Billy then took on the name Harm, a super villain in-training determined to become the world's greatest murderer.

Instead, she was effectively "stuck" in this plane of existence as a Warder; a being who was not quite alive, not quite dead, and yet a gateway into both the spheres of Heaven and Hell. Severely traumatized by her brutal death, Greta lost most of her memories and was contained by the D.E.O. She later escaped custody from the D.E.O. who attempted to trick Robin, Impulse, and Superboy into apprehending her for them. Upon discovering that she was not the mindless monster that the D.E.O. had proclaimed her to be and their intentions to experiment upon her, the trio secretly conspired to make it appear that she was destroyed and allowed her to make her own way in the world, free of being hunted by the D.E.O. This misadventure bonded the youthful heroes as friends and ultimately leading them to forming Young Justice.

Harm attacked Arrowette and stabbed one of her own arrows through her shoulder. The attack on the young super-heroine prompted her friends in Young Justice to seek out Harm, but he defeated them all easily.

Harm then captured Red Tornado, reprogrammed him, and placed a bomb in his chest. He left a clue for Young Justice and attempted to kidnap Pope John Paul II. Young Justice rescued the pontiff and removed the bomb from Red Tornado before it caused any damage, but Harm escaped during the fight.
