Biography
Harold Danforth
At some point, he gained superhuman abilities, though he never had any real ambitions to become a superhero. (Squadron Supreme v1 #12) Nighthawk, guided by Professor Imam's mystical crystal, reached out to Danforth. (Squadron Supreme v1 #7) Concerned by the way the Squadron Supreme was enforcing their rule of law through the implementation of the Utopia Program, Danforth joined up with Nighthawk's Redeemers, a group of vigilantes and villains determined to take down the Squadron. He adopted the costumed identity of Haywire. Several weeks passed, during which time the Redeemers ranks swelled to ten members including Haywire. They trained in secret in Nighthawk's luxurious New Troy manor and kept close tabs on the Squadron's whereabouts and activities. (Squadron Supreme v1 #10) Haywire fell madly in love with his fellow Redeemer Inertia. (Squadron Supreme v1 #12) During one of their regular meetings, the Redeemers watched a recent news report on the death of Tom Thumb and the introduction of the Hibernaculum, a device designed to preserve life even in the face of certain death. Haywire wondered if the public would ever go along with what he called 'this freeze-dry to cheat death baloney'. They then all shared what they'd learned about the Squadron and how they could use it to speed up the team's downfall. Nighthawk followed this by turning the subject to how the ten of them were going to overthrow the Squadron. (Squadron Supreme v1 #10)
It was decided Haywire and the other non-criminal members of the Redeemers would infiltrate the Squadron Supreme, simply by offering themselves up as new recruits. Taking up residence in Squadron City, they would bide their time until they were fully inducted and had complete access to their headquarters and its sensitive technologies. Haywire joined most of Squadron Supreme in an outdoor training session that came down to nine spirited games of capture the flag. Haywire's tanglewire proved particularly useful to protect his team's flag from opponents Foxfire, Inertia and Doctor Spectrum. He kept them at bay long enough for his team to win the ninth game. Haywire and the others were taken back to Squadron City where later that evening they were officially sworn in as Squadron members during a televised ceremony. Having gotten to know the Squadron, Haywire felt rotten about having to lie to them. After the ceremony, he was seen talking to Ape X, joking about how he looked better with his mask on. On the same night, Moonglow sent the design schematics of the behavior modification technology to their ally Master Menace. Haywire was playing table tennis in the Squadron's dormitory when Moonglow came by to inform her Redeemer allies that she had carried out the plan. Two days later, after touring the site of the hibernacle with Whizzer and Lamprey, Haywire lured Lamprey to a bar that was actually the Redeemers' hidden base. There, with Master Menace's help, they undid Lamprey's b-mod alterations. (Squadron Supreme v1 #11) When the Redeemers confronted the Squadron Supreme in battle, Haywire used his powers to trip the Whizzer, inadvertently playing a part in the death of his teammate Thermite, who was killed when Whizzer crashed into the regulator pack he wore to stop his powers from killing him. After the Squadron Supreme surrendered and dismantled their Utopia Project, Haywire remained a member of the team. He was part of the team when they faced the threat of the Nth Man. Haywire's lover Inertia was killed in the battle and Haywire was distraught. The survivors were transported to another Earth, Earth-616, where they clashed with other heroes like the Avengers. When the rest of the Squadron returned to their own Earth, Haywire elected to stay behind. (Squadron Supreme: Death of a Universe v1 #1)

Haywire had the ability to psionically generate a steel-like 'tanglewire' filament from his fingertips which he can use for a variety of purposes, including creating long grappling wires for locomotion, vast quantities for trapping, entangling, or binding his opponents, or forming simple shapes like spheres, cubes, and cones. The tanglewire can be sharp or safe, according to his will. The tanglewire is extremely tensile and durable; only omnium and adamantium can cut through it. The tanglewire is resistant to extremes of temperature and pressure. The tanglewire will remain in existence indefinitely or until he consciously wills it to dissipate, and will remain in existence if he is rendered unconscious. There is no known limit to the amount of tanglewire he can generate. He wears padded leather gloves to enable him to hold onto his tanglewire when necessary.
