Hiei is a male anime and manga character who features in YuYu Hakusho.

Biography

Jaganshi Hiei (邪じゃ眼がん師し飛ひ影えい? Master of the Evil Eye: Flying Shadow) was an Imiko ("cursed child") who was a male fire demon born to a kōrime ("ice maiden") that were an all-female race. He was born male because his mother had 'interacted' with a male fire demon outside her isolationist Koorime community. After being born, Hiei came to be cast out as an infant and thrown over the mountain of the demon community. Despite the attempt to kill him, he managed to survive the fall down to the surface of Makai where he came to be found by a gang of bandits where he was raised by them. Shortly afterwards, he came to see the value of the Tear Stone shed by his mother at his birth which he began to wear in full view of everyone hoping to attract enemies to kill. When he was 5 years old, Hiei had achieved A Class youki status according to Mukuro where as he grew older he was killed mostly for fun causing those that survived to greatly fear and reject him. As he grew older, he killed mostly for fun, causing those that survived to greatly fear and reject him. After he was rejected, he continued to wear his stone in full view, yet gathered an attachment to it, as it gave him a sense of calmness. Nonetheless, he lost it when he fought a demon, and he vowed to thenceforth search for it.

Personality and attributes

Normally, he kept his distance from others with this making him appear aloof and elusive.

Hiei typically squabbles with Kazuma Kuwabara and keeps a cold and uncaring exterior, but deep down is a loner who desires true friendship and companionship and seems to hold a certain amount of respect for all his teammates. He seems to be closer to Yusuke and Kurama. Hiei prefers to work on his own agenda, and has a notorious reputation in the Demon Realm, but despite this, he is very honorable and always keeps his word.

Powers and abilities

Hiei was born a hybrid fire and ice yōkai where he inherited abilities from both his parent races. As such, he had pyrokinetic and cryokinetic powers which granted him amazing resistance to extreme temperatures as well as limited immunity against fire and ice-based attacks.

A side effect of his extreme speed was that he could produce afterimages of himself in order to confuse opponents who are unable to follow his movements.

Besides being a master swordsman, Hiei was also lightning fast, able to move much faster than human, and sometimes demon, eyes can follow. He is a master of the Kokuryuuha, or Dragon of the Darkness Flame, which he tamed and summons from the Demon Realm, using his right arm as a sacrifice, and which he later consumes to be able to call upon its power.

In time, he came to be implanted with the Jagan (邪じゃ眼がん Jagan?, translated as Evil Eye) that was the surgically-implanted third eye which was done by the demonic osteopath Shigure. Located on his forehead, the implant amplified all his natural powers where it enabled him to summon both the hell-fires of his homeland, Makai (魔界 Demon Realm) and Ningenkai (Human Realm). At the same time, it also granted him several near psychic abilities, such as: hypnosis, telepathy, and remote viewing powers. It is hidden behind a special sutra inscribed strip of cloth he uses as a bandana.

With the Jagan, Hiei was able to transform into his Jaganshi (邪眼師, literally translated as Evil Eye Expert) form. In this state, his skin turns green and eyes sprout all over his body.

During the Dark Martial Arts Competition, he came to join Team Urameshi that was headed by Yusuke Urameshi.
