Biography

Hol Horse (Japanese: ホル・ホース, Hepburn: Horu Hōsu) was a male human who came to operate in the late 1980's where at some point he came to manifest a Stand and served as a mercenary where he worked for DIO.

He was assigned as one of the hired assassins tasked with killing Jotaro Kujo and his companions during their journey to defeat DIO. Horse mets with J. Geil and the two decide to kill Jean Pierre Polnareff whilst he was separated from the Joestar Group. The following day, Hol Horse confronted Polnareff with his Emperor Stand whilst J. Geil supported him through his Hanged Man. Unlike other enemies who attacked recklessly, Hol Horse approached with confidence and flair, immediately demonstrating his Stand, the Emperor, a revolver capable of firing bullets that he could remotely control midair. His first encounter was with Muhammad Avdol, and he used his Stand’s bullets to corner him by manipulating their trajectory. However, Polnareff’s interference allowed Avdol to defend himself briefly, and when Hol Horse pressed his advantage, J. Geil, his partner, delivered the killing blow to Avdol with his Stand Hanged Man. Hol Horse treated the assassination as a performance, combining his sharpshooting with his Stand’s precision to strike terror in the group before making a flamboyant escape. Hol Horse later pursued the Joestar group in a desert region alongside J. Geil, plotting to eliminate them one by one. He worked with calculated cruelty, using his Stand to manipulate bullets that could bend around obstacles and hit targets from impossible angles. Despite his bravado, Hol Horse relied on J. Geil’s ambush tactics, with Hanged Man striking from reflective surfaces while Hol Horse distracted the heroes with gunfire. However, Polnareff and Kakyoin managed to turn the tables, forcing J. Geil into a vulnerable position where he was killed. Hol Horse attempted to retaliate, but without his partner’s support, he was overwhelmed and forced into retreat. His overconfidence faltered when faced with the group united against him, revealing that his skill with Emperor was dangerous but limited when he lacked allies to coordinate with. However, the interference from Nena gave Hol Horse a chance to escape, with the Joestar Group deciding to let him go.

Afterwards, Hol Horse faced an adversarial interaction with Enya the Hag, the mother of his late partner, J. Geil. Upon reaching the town in Pakistan that Enya controlled, Hol Horse lied to her, claiming he and J. Geil were close friends. Enya, however, held him partially responsible for failing to protect her son and retaliated with her Stand, Justice. She first attacked him with scissors and, using her Stand's power to control victims through their wounds, forced him to point his own Stand, Emperor, at himself. Hol Horse narrowly survived by disengaging his Stand just before the bullet could strike him. He attempted to form a temporary alliance with Jean Pierre Polnareff against Enya, but Polnareff, recalling Hol Horse's earlier attack on Muhammad Avdol, rejected his offer. After Enya was subsequently defeated, Hol Horse reappeared, seizing the opportunity to steal the Crusaders' jeep and escape alone, displaying his self-serving nature. Following his escape and the defeat of Mariah, Hol Horse traveled back to Cairo, where he reported to DIO. After facing criticism from DIO for his multiple failures, Hol Horse grew emboldened and attempted to assassinate DIO with Emperor. However, Hol Horse was cowed by DIO's power and, broken, swore eternal loyalty to DIO where he was given one final chance to kill the Joestar group.

Hol Horse flies to Aswan to forcibly take Boingo with him for assistance in dispatching the protagonists with Tohth. On the way out of the airport, Hol Horse antagonizes a pair of men and makes them flee when he shoots one man's ear off. Afterward, he manages to convince Boingo to work with him. At first, Hol Horse is taken aback by Tohth's strange predictions but is ultimately convinced of their reliability after he kicks a woman to save her from a scorpion and is rewarded with a jewel. Hol Horse and Boingo then stalk the Joestar Group in the streets of Cairo, knowing that Hol Horse must now put his fingers in Polnareff's nose which will somehow end up in victory. Polnareff does surprise Hol Horse and almost takes him out but Boingo distracts Polnareff, allowing Hol Horse to put his fingers in Polnareff's nose. As the rest of the group comes to Polnareff, Hol Horse is forced to hide in a corner and hold Polnareff at gunpoint to force him to lie. Polnareff tips off the group and thanks to his irritated nose, manages to avoid being shot by sneezing, making Hol Horse stumble out of his hiding place. Cornered, Hol Horse was saved whden the two thugs from earlier try to run him down but their truck slips on spilled oil and crashes into the heroes instead. Hol Horse and Boingo retreated behind another corner and see that Hol Horse will shoot into a pipe at noon exactly and put bullets through Jotaro's head. Nervous and eager, Hol Horse ends up shooting too early into the pipe and Jotaro Kujo is saved when Polnareff sneezes again on his face, making him back out of the bullet's path in disgust. The operation goes horribly awry as Tohth's prediction backfires on them, ending with Emperor's own bullets hitting Hol Horse right in the face, just as he realizes the time on his watch was advanced. While severe, the bullet wounds stopped just short of his skull with Hol Horse hospitalized.

Overview

Personality and attributes

In appearance, Hol Horse was a tall, lean-built human male of medium build with long blond hair that flowed from beneath a wide-brimmed cowboy hat, reinforcing his gunslinger persona. At his back, he has light, neck-length hair. He had dimples in his cheeks and a cleft chin. His clothing matched his Western aesthetic: a form-fitting shirt tucked into belted trousers, tall boots, and accessories such as holsters and a revolver-shaped Stand that manifested as a tangible weapon. His face was sharp and angular, often carrying a smug grin or exaggerated expressions of bravado. The distinctive cowboy imagery was central to his look, marking him as flamboyant and ostentatious compared to other assassins encountered during the journey.

On the surface, he seemed to be a confident and smooth-talking with women who acted like a stereotypical movie gunslinger.

Hol Horse’s personality was flamboyant, arrogant, and opportunistic. He reveled in theatrics, treating combat as both spectacle and personal performance, and often underestimated his opponents because of his own overconfidence in Emperor’s accuracy. At the same time, he was pragmatic, preferring to work with allies rather than fight alone, as he openly admitted that he was most dangerous as part of a team. His cowardice would show when situations turned against him, causing him to flee rather than stand and fight. This combination of showmanship, opportunism, and survival instinct defined his early interactions with the Joestar group.

His defining trait was his profound and calculating cowardice, a pragmatic survival instinct that overshadowed any pretense of villainous ambition. He was a mercenary at heart, driven by money rather than loyalty, and was acutely aware of his own limitations, particularly the weaknesses of his Stand, Emperor. This awareness led him to adopt a "Number Two" philosophy, preferring to partner with stronger individuals who could compensate for his shortcomings and create opportunities for his ranged attacks. This opportunism and self-preservation guided his actions; he would readily flee any confrontation that turned against him, as he did after the death of J. Geil and again following his conflict with Enya the Hag, where he played dead before stealing the heroes' jeep. His outward confidence and bravado were merely a facade, a posturing that quickly evaporated when faced with overwhelming power, such as DIO's. His attempted assassination of DIO was a brief, misguided moment of greed that was born from his desperation and ultimately revealed the true depths of his intimidation. Ultimately, Hol Horse's survival was ensured not by strength or bravery, but by his quick-witted ability to deceive, retreat, and align himself with whatever course of action offered the safest and most profitable path.

It was shown that he demonstrated a strong sense of pragmatism in battle, relying on his revolver and stand to execute attacks efficiently while minimizing personal risk. He preferred to assess the battlefield carefully, aiming to exploit weaknesses rather than engage in prolonged confrontations, reflecting a calculated and resourceful mindset.

Despite his arrogance, Hol Horse preferred to see himself as a "No.2 kind of guy" rather than a "No.1 kind of guy". This stemmed from the fact that he was aware of how weak his Stand was when compared to the others.

Hol Horse also showed a blend of arrogance and loyalty. While confident in his own abilities, he often deferred to more powerful allies like Dio, recognizing hierarchical authority and adapting his approach accordingly. He combined this loyalty with opportunistic pragmatism, ready to flee or negotiate if a situation turned unfavorable, yet his loyalty and humor often made him a dependable partner in cooperative strategies.

While originally seen working with J. Geil, he later becomes partners with Boingo.

Powers and abilities

As a human, Hol Horse had no superhuman physiology where physically he possessed the natural capabilities of a fit man—able to ride horses, wield firearms, and move with agility. However, his human body was otherwise vulnerable to injury, as seen when his attacks were turned back on him.

Hol Horse was a human who came to be a Stand (スタンド Sutando) wielder where he came to wield the Emperor (エンペラー(皇帝) Enperā) that took the form of a revolver. When fired, the Emperor could control the flight of a bullet allowing Hol Horse a remarkable level of accuracy. With this power, he could even cause bullets to turn mid-air to strike his target. Emperor’s precision gave Hol Horse a deadly edge against unsuspecting foes, though it required careful timing and concentration to use effectively. Despite his accuracy, he was individually quite weak and required a partner to serve as his backup to protect him from counterattacks.

Novels

  • In JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Crazy Diamond's Demonic Heartbreak, Hol Horse appeared in the setting of the non-canonical spinoff written by Kouhei Kadono. According to these events, Hol Horse was born in a certain country in Eastern Europe which no longer exists as of 1999, since it divided into multiple other countries. The streets of his country were full of abandoned children due to artificial abortions being banned. Hol Horse's mother passed away in a hospital when giving birth to him. Consequently, he was raised in an institution as an orphan among other similar children. The orphanage referred to children by "H" or "S", indicating whether they were born in a hospital but whose mother had died there, or if they were picked up from the streets. The country paid the facility more money for children who came from hospitals. Thus, Hol Horse was called "H" and given preferential treatment such as being able to take showers. Due to the hospital not properly keeping records, Hol Horse did not know who his parents were or how they looked like, but since his mother gave her life for him, he dedicated his feelings of gratitude to her to all women. Children couldn't stay in the institution for long and would be thrown back onto the streets at a certain age, but Hol Horse voluntarily left before that using his Stand, which he was born with, to his advantage. At some point after he left the orphange, Hol Horse watched Clint Eastwood's A Fistful of Dollars in a movie theater. He was inspired by the protagonist, the Man with No Name, and started dressing like a cowboy after that, deciding that he would live freely. At first, Emperor's bullets only had the power of an adult's punch, but it eventually had the same destructive power as a normal gun by his mid-teens. When the country was about to collapse, Hol Horse was able to avoid the civil war by fleeing and worked dirty jobs in the underworld. He turned all of his negative experiences into positives, exploiting his hardships as stories to evoke sympathy when flirting with women. Eventually, the town where he was born changed its name, and the residents of the street where he lived had all moved, so Hol Horse no longer had a hometown. Hol Horse was assigned the 'Emperor' tarot card by Enya the Hag before being assigned the mission to kill the Joestar Group. Hol Horse met with Devo the Cursed who criticizes his cowardice and threatened him to stay out of his way with the puppet possessed by Ebony Devil. After Hol Horse attempted to betray DIO but succumbed to his power, he came across several women lying on the floor of DIO's mansion, some of them dead with blood drained from their necks. He found a few that were still barely alive. At first, he wondered why he should get involved with these random women, but ended up saving three of them by carrying them out of the mansion and then shoving them into a taxi. He gave the driver money and ordered him to quickly drive away.
