Biography

John was a male human whose mother was pregnant with him when her unborn child was experimented on with Compound V by Vought-American.

The company's cover story for the Homelander was that he was an alien who landed in the United States as an infant, much like Superman. In reality, he was grown in a secret laboratory, the progeny of genetic material taken from Stormfront, who was injected with Compound V while still a member of the Hitler Youth. Homelander spent most of his young life chained down with a hydrogen bomb strapped to him in case he tried to escape. His mother was a mentally disabled woman who died giving birth to him.

Homelander remains under the financial thumb of VA, as their money funds the Seven's hedonistic lifestyle. Homelander eventually tries to encourage the other superheroes to do what they want, but relents due to his fear towards his boss

He was present at the Seven's headquarters where he greeted the team's newest recruit Starlight. Whilst in the meeting room, he blackmailed her into providing himself, Black Noir and A-Train oral sex in exchange for being a member of the Seven. (The Boys v1 #1)

uring the terrorist attack on September 11, 2001, the Seven were sent to stop the terrorists that took over a passenger plane and rescue the people inside. Unfortunately, Homelander and the rest of his team didn't understand the tactical or physical challenges the mission required, this coupled with the fact that Black Noir fell while being carried and Jack from Jupiter fleed the scene, resulted in the Seven making the situation worse. Homelander and Maeve forcefully opened the plane door during the flight, resulting in one of the kids that was close to the door being sucked out of the plane and dying due to the the cabin decompression. Entering the plane while the air was escaping, Queen Maeve told the scared passengers to put their oxygen masks on while Homelander strolled to the cockpit to stop the terrorists. Being overwhelmed by all the passengers screaming for help, Homelander told them to shut up with his sonic scream, making the passengers' eardrums bleed. After the Deep broke the windshield, Homelander killed the terrorists and the plane began to fall. As Queen Maeve chastised him for his incompetence, Homelander gave up and left the plane with Mister Marathon holding on to him. After Marathon convinced him that they should help the planet otherwise Vought would fire them, Homelander flew towards the back of the plane in an attempt to shove the tail down and level it. Not measuring his own strength, Homelander ended up breaking the plane in half and killed Mister Marathon due to the impact. The fractured plane ended up crashing into the Brooklyn Bridge.

Homelander resolves to free himself and the superhero community from Vought-American's control. He leads the other superheroes in a coup d'etat against the United States, launching an attack on the White House and killing everyone inside, including the President. During the subsequent confrontation between Homelander and Butcher, the masked Black Noir arrives in the Oval Office and reveals himself to be a clone of Homelander created solely to kill and replace him if he ever went rogue. Gradually being driven insane due to not being allowed to kill Homelander, Noir reveals that he committed the atrocities documented in the photos, including raping Butcher's wife, in order to trick Homelander into thinking he had dissociative identity disorder and pitting Butcher against him, so that Noir would finally be given authorization by the Vought Guy to fulfill his purpose. Outraged, Homelander attacks Black Noir, who proceeds to tear Homelander apart. Before dying, Homelander manages to seriously injure his former teammate, allowing Butcher to later finish him off with a crowbar.

Notes

  • Homelander was created by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson where he made his first appearance in The Boys v1 #3 (November, 2006).
  • In an interview on Newsarama, Ennis said on the character, "Yeah, well the Homelander to me is an almost entirely negative character. He is really just a series of unpleasant urges kept in check by his own intelligence, which is enough to understand that he can have anything he wants so long as he doesn’t push his luck too far... It might help to think of the Homelander as having all the self control of let’s say a fourteen year old."

In other media

Television

  • In The Boys, Homelander appeared in the setting of the live-action Amazon television series where he was portrayed by actor Antony Starr. John Vogelbaum was raised in a laboratory where he displayed many sociopathic tendencies and was openly contemptuous of those he considered lesser beings. Grown from Soldier Boy's DNA and having been reared in a laboratory environment to become Homelander, John Gillman displays many sociopathic tendencies and is openly contemptuous of those he considered lesser beings.
  • In The Boys Presents: Diabolical, Homelander appeared in the setting of the animated television shorts.

Video games

  • In Mortal Kombat 1, Homelander appeared as a playable guest fighter via the "Kombat Pack" DLC where he was voiced by actor Jake Green. His likeness was based on his television actor Anthony Starr though he would not voice the game version of the character. Homelander is the most powerful being on the planet and the leader of The Seven, the elite superhero team owned and managed by Vought International. In a world where "Supes" are made, he's the strongest of them all. He can fly, has super strength, and can laser enemies with his eyes. Homelander presents himself as the ultimate patriot and protector, but don't let his movie star good looks or high approval rating fool you. He is a murderous, narcissistic sociopath with an insatiable need for validation, love and power. Homelander's destruction of enemies and lust for power does not end with his world. Challengers from other realms will face his wrath.
