Biography

Pre-Crisis

Matson

It was once believed that he died at the secret headquarters of the League of Assassins when he faced his trial before their leader, the Sensei. (Strange Adventures v1 #215)

Post-Crisis

Following the Crisis on Infinite Earths, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events.

However, Hook was never killed by the Sensei at all but instead became a member of the Seven Men of Death. (Batman v1 #671)

As part of the Seven Men, Hook was summoned to Gotham City to retrieve the Suit of Sorrows from the Order of Purity, but he was easily defeated by the new Azrael. (Azrael: Death's Dark Knight v1 #1) After Talia managed to stop Azrael for a moment, Hook and the others tried to take him to their headquarters, but Azrael recovered and stopped Hook by hitting him with a low blow. (Azrael: Death's Dark Knight v1 #2)

Sometime later, the Seven were sent back to Gotham to find and eliminate the reporter Vicki Vale, but they were confronted by several members of the Bat-Family. Hook was confronted by Man-Bat and after a long struggle, Hook was finally defeated. (Bruce Wayne: The Road Home: Oracle v1 #1)

Post-Flashpoint

Following the Flashpoint, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events.

Overview

Personality and attributes

In appearance, the Hook was a tall, athletic, and fair-skinned Caucasian male who possessed sharp facial features, deep-set eyes, and short, neatly cropped dark hair. Intentionally projecting the low-profile, unassuming look of an elite underworld mercenary or an international traveler, he completely rejected flamboyant superhero capes, colorful spandex, or high-tech tactical body armor. Instead, his signature wardrobe consisted of practical, durable civilian street clothes, featuring a simple dark long-sleeved shirt layered under a heavy, utilitarian vest and casual trousers that allowed for absolute speed on the battlefield. The most defining, asymmetrical element of his physical frame was his left arm, which completely lacked a human hand; in its place rested a massive, custom-forged steel hook hook-attachment that gleamed under bright lights, presenting a ghostly and menacing silhouette that served as his literal criminal namesake. (Strange Adventures v1 #215)

Powers and abilities

The Hook possessed no baseline innate metahuman mutations, genetic enhancements, or mystical superpowers, instead relying entirely on his peak-human physical conditioning, mastery over conventional firearms, and close-quarters brawling leverage. He wielded an exceptional level of proficiency with high-powered sniper rifles, allowing him to accurately account for distance and wind resistance to systematically neutralize time-sensitive targets from concealed vantage points. His primary personal offensive tool during melee skirmishes was his custom-forged metal prosthetic, which he handled with cold precision to block incoming blade strikes, deliver bone-shattering blunt-force strikes, and violently tear through physical defenses. Furthermore, his training under the Society of Assassins granted him advanced stealth capabilities and quick reflexes, enabling him to successfully slip past local law enforcement perimeters and navigate crowded urban landscapes without drawing immediate intervention. (Strange Adventures v1 #215)

He came to be a member of the Seven Men of Death who were the most elite assassins within the League of Assassins. (Batman v1 #671)

Notes

  • Hook was created by Jack Miller and Neal Adams where he made his first appearance in Strange Adventures v1 #210 (March, 1968).

Television

  • In Young Justice, Hook appeared in the setting of the animated television series starting from the episode "Infiltrator". Black Spider, Cheshire and Hook attended a meeting with Sensei, who gave them instructions to assassinate Selena Gonzalez, the CEO of Farano Enterprises. The assassins infiltrated Gonzalez's office where Kid Flash, Robin and Aqualad tried to protect her, but the assassins captured the three young heroes after a short fight with Black Spider tying them up. The heroes broke loose and defeated Hook and Black Spider. Selena Gonzalez escaped and was killed by assassins waiting outside. Hook and Spider were taken to jail, but escaped the next day. Cheshire later brought Hook and Black Spider along on the hit on Serling Roquette. Hook took on Miss Martian, who telekinetically directed his hook back at him, knocking him out. Hook was taken to Belle Reve Penitentiary, where he helped with Icicle Sr.'s breakout attempt. He stood guard outside Amanda Waller's office with Abra Kadabra and Professor Ojo. Hook, Abra, and Ojo were all frozen to a wall by Icicle Jr. when he was tricked into helping Superboy get the prison under control again.
