History
The Horn of Proteus was an artifact used by the aquatic Atlanteans.
Prince Namor, the Sub-Mariner declared war on the United States, mistakenly believing that they were responsible for the destruction of his kingdom in the Southern Ocean. He used the Horn of Proteus to summon forth Giganto - a huge whale-like creature, which he claimed was the largest thing on the planet Earth. Using the horn to control the creature, the Sub-Mariner attacked New York City. He fought up against the neophyte superhero team, the Fantastic Four. When it appeared that he might be defeated, he prepared to use the horn again, but the Human Torch used his powers to create a tornado via a thermal updraft that whisked the Sub-Mariner away. (Fantastic Four v1 #4)
It was found again by the Atlantean warlord Seth, who used the horn to summon several undersea creatures to attack the US Navy. When the creatures began attacking New York uncontrollably, Seth used the Horn again to lead the creatures out to sea, where he, the creatures and the horn were buried in an undersea earthquake. (Sub-Mariner v1 #21)
Years later, it was found on the seabed by the X-Terminators. Not knowing what they had found, X-Terminators member Boom Boom blew into it, accidentally summoning a giant octopus. This creature was defeated by the combined might of the X-Terminators, Namor the Sub-Mariner, and the New Mutants. After this battle, Namor would return to Atlantis and take the horn with him.
