The Horn of Proteus is an artifact that features in Marvel Comics.

History

The Horn of Proteus was an artifact used by the aquatic Atlanteans.

The Sub-Mariner came to use the horn to summon Giganto in an attack against the surface world but came to be lost at sea during a battle with the Fantastic Four. (Fantastic Four v1 #4)

Notes

  • The Horn of Proteus was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby where it made its first appearance in Fantastic Four v1 #4 (May, 1962).
  • According to the All-New Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe A to Z v1 #1 (2006), the Horn of Proteus was a gift to the Atlanteans from Neptune during a time he lived amongst them.

Television

  • In Avengers Assemble, the Horn of Proteus made multiple appearances in the animated television series. In Season 5, a variant of it was shown known as the Horn of Neptune that was also able to summon numerous powerful creatures from the ocean depths through a unique sound generated from the pattern of the shell that could generate considerable amounts of power. Tiger Shark possessed the relic and used it in his strike against the surface world where he summoned a many tentacled sea beast to attack New York. He then destroyed the relic to prevent the Avengers from calling off the sea creature but the heroes were able to replicate the sound effect to send the beast back to the ocean.
