History
The Hosts
Arnold and Ford were the co-creators and designers of Westworld. During the early years of the park's development, Ford saw Arnold become obsessed with the hosts, after the death of Arnold's son.
Overview
Their bodies comprised a metallic endoskeleton with mechanical joints covered by an external layer of flesh-like material. Their robotic forms would be repaired when damaged, or completely replaced, as necessary, with the 'pearl' being transferred to each new body.
In the early years of the park, hosts were android in form, being mostly mechanical. In more recent years, hosts have been constructed primarily of biological material. Medical technology advanced enough to allow for the 3D printing of organs and entire bodies from organic materials which closely imitate the bone, organs, blood, and tissues of a natural-born human. These bodies are less expensive or difficult to repair, since the same medical technology used to heal and treat humans can also works to repair an organic host.
Besides expense and reparability, the organic bodies give a more convincing and life-like experience for the guests, since a host can eat, drink, breath, have sex, bleed, die, etc. like a natural human. Just like normal human flesh, this tissue 'deteriorates' over time in inactive hosts. Similar to the mechanical bodies, biological hosts are healed and repaired, or remade, as necessary, with the host's consciousness being transferred from body to body.
Each host consists of an artificially created intelligence, with a personal identify, backstory, and processing unit, contained in a transferable "pearl", and an interchangeable body.
The hosts are built and programmed to act out both storylines and narratives in the park by interacting with each other and with guests. They were designed to be incapable of hurting any living non-host.
All hosts are all built with an explosive in their C6 vertebra which was the second to last vertebra in the neck. This explosive will detonate if a host left the boundaries of the park.
