House of El is a family that features in DC Comics.

History

Pre-Crisis

El family in Krypton Chronicles v1 #1.

The House of El were a family of Kryptonians who lived on the planet Krypton.

Bur-El married the daughter of his friend who was the inventor Kil-Gor who in turn became a part of the family by marriage. (Superman v1 #268)

On Rokyn, the inhabitants of Krypton built the El family vaults on their new world. (Krypton Chronicles v1 #1)

Post-Crisis

Following the Crisis on Infinite Earths, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events.

In the face of Krypton's impending doom, Jor-El sought a world that could serve as a home for his son with him sending probes that could bring the mind of an inhabitant in the form of a tactile hologram. Among these planets was Earth where Thomas Wayne's mind came to Krypton with Jor-El taking him to his home at the House of El with the encounter leading to him determining that mankind would accept his son Kal-El. (Superman/Batman v1 #50)

Modern

Post-Flashpoint

Following the Flashpoint, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events.

Overview

It was said that the family of El had been a part of Krypton's history for five millennia with them producing statesmen, scientists and soldiers. The unknown was considered the destiny of the El's with others on Krypton hesitating in the face of it. (World of Krypton v1 #1)

Alternate Versions

  • In Future State: Superman: House of El v1 #1 (2021), it was shown that the House of El continued in the alternate possible timeline of Future State. It was shown that the family line continued through Superman's descendants that continued to many years into the future. These included children who had married members of other races and grew the House of El into a large family.

In other media

Television

  • In Smallville, the House of El appeared in the setting of the live-action television series. It was remarked by Dax-Ur that the House of El had always been survivors.
  • In Supergirl, the House of El featured in the live-action television series with Kara Zor-El belonging to the family with her and Kal-El both being the last survivors of Krypton. Kara said that the 'S' symbol on their uniforms was their family's coat of arms.
  • In Krypton, the House of El featured in the live-action television series that was set two generations ago on the planet Krypton. Its leader was the scientist Val-El who determined the existence of alien life and that a powerful force was destroying entire worlds on a course for Krypton. For his actions, he was deemed a heretic by the ruling religious leader known as the Voice of Rao who had the once prestigious family stripped of its status. The authorities sought out Val-El's hidden Fortress of Solitude but he refused leading to him seemingly being killed. The House of El was thus stripped of its once proud station leaving Seyg-El along with his parents left to work in the lower levels of Kandor City.

Films

  • In Man of Steel, the House of El appeared in the setting of the live-action film.

Video games

  • In Injustice 2, the House of El was referenced in the setting of the fighting video game.
