Hulkbusters are an organization that features in Marvel Comics.

History

The Hulkbusters were a U.S. military unit created by General Thunderbolt Ross with the express purpose of eliminating the Hulk where they were based at Project: Greenskin base. During its construction, Peter Corbeau was looking for a means of returning Bruce Banner back to normal. Hulkbuster base came to detect the Hulk with a jets being sent to hunt down the Green Goliath. They were successful in knocking him unconscious whereupon a VTOL managed to take him to headquarters. Dr. Corbeau then conducted an experiment using Starcore-One station that turned the Hulk back into Bruce Banner. (Incredible Hulk v1 #148)

A new incarnation of the team was formed by Bruce Banner with Project Hulkbuster gathering a team of skilled operatives. The purpose of the new team was to destroy the Hulk after the gamma mutate had been separated from Banner as he deemed it too dangerous to live in the world. (Incredible Hulk v2 #317)

After the creation of the Superhuman Registration Act, S.H.I.E.L.D. came to form a Hulkbuster unit under its control where it was headed by Clay Quartermain and came to recruit She-Hulk into their ranks. (She-Hulk v2 #15)

Notes

  • The Hulkbusters were created by Archie Goodwin, Chris Claremont, and Herb Trimpe where they made their first appearance in Incredible Hulk v1 #148 (February, 1972).

Alternate Versions

  • In Ultimate Spider-Man v1 #100 (2006), an alternate version of the Hulkbusters appeared in the setting of Ultimate Marvel world of Earth-1610. They served Nick Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D. Hulkbuster units have been used to take down major threats such as the Green Goblin and Venom.

Television

  • In The Incredible Hulk, the Hulkbusters appeared in the setting of the 1990s animated television series. They were led by Thunderbolt Ross and S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Gabriel Jones where they were tasked with tracking down Bruce Banner.
  • In Wolverine and the X-Men, the Hulkbusters made a cameo appearance in the setting of the animated television series in the episode "Wolverine vs. the Hulk".
  • In The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes, the Hulkbuster unit made an appearance in the animated series. James Rhodes attempted to convince Tony Stark to continue providing weapons for the Hulkbusters but he refused as he no longer wanted to remain in the weapons business. In "Panthers Quest", a Hulkbuster unit was dispatched to investigate the supervillain prison called the Cube but were attacked by the now freed prisoners inside of it. In "Gamma World", a Hulkbuster unit was dispatched against the Hulk after he was sighted in Northern Canada.
  • In Ultimate Spider-Man, the Hulkbusters appeared in the setting of the animated television series in the episode "The Incredible Spider-Hulk". This version was led by Agent Phil Coulson in tracking down Peter Parker, who Mesmero had trapped in the Hulk's body.
  • In Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H., the Hulkbusters appeared in the setting of the animated television series. This version serves as a countermeasure for the titular agents of S.M.A.S.H. In the episode "Hulk-Busted", the Leader hijacks the Hulkbusters to attack the agents, but Iron Man distracts the Hulkbusters while a stealth-bot uploads a virus into their armor, defeating several of them allowing the agents of S.M.A.S.H. to fight back. The remaining Hulkbusters combine into one giant Hulkbuster and capture Iron Man in an attempt to use his arc reactor to destroy a nearby city and frame the agents of S.M.A.S.H. However, the Hulk frees Iron Man, who redirects the giant Hulkbuster into a river. In the episode "Homecoming", the Abomination gains a small group of Hulkbusters programmed to obey him following his reinstatement into the U.S. Army. He uses the Hulkbusters to take over the small town of Vista Verde, but the agents of S.M.A.S.H. fight and destroy them.
  • In Avengers Assemble, the Hulkbusters appeared in the setting of the animated television series. In the episode "Head to Head", a Mind Stone-empowered MODOK uses Hulkbusters to take control of S.H.I.E.L.D. and harass the Avengers.

Video games

  • In The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction, the Hulkbusters appeared in the setting of the video game. They were headed by General Ross and Director Emil Blonsky where they were tasked with the capture of the Hulk. It consisted of soldiers that remotely controlled mechanical armors of varying sizes and capabilities.
