History
The Huragok (Engineers) were an artificially engineered species that were created by the ancient Forerunners. They were created for the purpose of maintenance and repair of technology along with installations over long ages of time.
Following the activation of the Halo Arrays, the Engineers were present on a number of M-series Forerunner facilities. The San'Shyuum during their forays into space encountered the Huragok and conscripted the creatures into their service. In time, the Engineers were added as one of the member races of the Covenant.
Surviving Engineers were put by the UNSC on the Infinity project and at high-priority Forerunner research sites such as Trevelyan.
Despite their assistance greatly benefiting humans by spurring technological development and the understanding of Forerunner relics, the Huragok are under perpetual scrutiny due to the UNSC's limited knowledge of them, including possible hardwired directives that could potentially be exploited by threats such as the Ur-Didact.
On the Forerunner shield world Trevelyan, numerous findings were discovered by the Office of Naval Intelligence with hem discovering the native armor system used by the Forerunner Prefects late in their civilizations history. The Watershed Division leveraged the local Huragok in reverse-engineering the original abandoned design and grafting it onto the baseline Spartan-IV Mjolnir armor creating the PREFECT-class Mjolnir.
Several Huragok were used by the Banished to repair and shield their vehicles during their occupation of Installation 00. These Huragok in the service of the Banished existed in constant agony due to the control yokes bonded to their flesh forcing them to ignore endless requests for maintenance from the Ark as a result of Atriox's extraction and excavation efforts. Extended exposure to Voridus' infusion gel altered his Huragok assistants, causing some to simply fall apart while the rest changed in other-more subtle-ways. These 'damaged' Engineers came to be shunned by their healthy companions and displayed distinctly non-Huragok behaviors, such as a lack of interest in repairing Forerunner machinery and sabotaging equipment of Banished who have annoyed them in the past.
Overview
In appearance, Huragok (Facticius indoles) were a non-humanoid species that floating in the air through the use of air pockets and had a long slender neck and had numerous tentacles that served as limbs. As an artificial construct, they were not organic but rather composed of nanomechanical substances that were able to look and operate like organic material.
Reproduction was almost more mechanical than being biological but there were strong similarities. Engineers thus manufactured their offspring from readily available organic materials that were manipulated through the use of tentacles cilia. The most difficult step in the crafting process was the delicacy needed in ensuring that the offspring was perfectly buoyant by filling them with the exact mix of gases. As a result, newly born Huragok either float or sink initially following their creation. This also influenced the name the Engineer gave to their child.
