Biography

IG-88 was a droid built a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away.

During the Age of the Empire, IG-88 teamed up with Hondo Ohnaka to collect the bounty on Crimson Dawn lieutenant Qi'ra's head. Tracking Qi'ra down, IG-88 and Hondo managed to apprehend Qi'ra. Turning the bounty hunter and the pirate against each other, Qi'ra convinced IG-88 to collect the bounty on Hondo instead of the bounty on her. Attacking Hondo, IG-88 was quickly stunned and put in binders. After Qi'ra had similarly tricked and apprehended Hondo, IG-88 was led away by Qi'ra so that she could collect the bounty on his head.

The bounty hunter droid was one among many that were hired by Darth Vader to retrieve the crew of the Millennium Falcon.

He was one of a number of bounty hunters that received a summons from Darth Vader where he travelled to the Super Star Destroyer Executor. Once there, he joined others that included Boba Fett, Bossk, Dengar, Zuckuss and 4-LOM.

Overview

Personality and attributes

Powers and abilities

IG-88 was a battered chrome war droid who had become a bounty hunter.

He carried an arsenal of weapons, including blaster rifles, pulse cannons, a DAS-430 Neural Inhibitor and a needle dart gun that launched poison darts.

Notes

  • IG-88 was created by George Lucas and featured in the setting of the Star Wars universe.
  • Ralph McQuarrie's production sketches showed a sleeker design than the droid that appears in The Empire Strikes Back.
  • In an interview, Bill Hargreaves said, "IG-88 was never going to be more than a filler for the now infamous bounty hunter Lineup. I decided we needed a real dirty, evil, and vicious bot. Like the bounty hunters of old. Lots of weapons and protection. Dark and oily. So we made him big- 7'8"ish tall. Had to drop him down a level on set to get him in shot. Lean, but strong. In short, a killer. We started with the head. Then with all the bits, we had the rest. It just came together to us until was just right. No, some of the grown-ups were not taken with the idea. It was taking a different direction from the other bots, but I thought it should. And when someone said, "I don't think you would find a robot like that on a spaceship," my reply was, "You would on mine." The rest is history."
  • The term "IG-88" itself was not the original label with the script calls the character a "chrome war droid", and during production it was called a "Phlutdroid".
  • The production puppet consisted of recycled props from Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, including the use of a Mos Eisley Cantina drink dispenser as its head.

Alternate Versions

  • In Star Wars Legends, IG-88A received a largely different backstory in the former Star Wars Expanded Universe. He was revealed as one of four assassin droids created as Project Phlutdroid. After activation, he killed his creators at Hollowan Laboratories and implanted copies of his mind in the other three IG-88 series bodies creating IG-88B, IG-88C and IG-88D. He believed he was superior to organic life and intended to wipe out biological entities from the galaxy where he operated as a bounty hunter whilst looking to achieve his goal. Following their wanton destruction of Holowan Laboratories and their ruthless assassination purges of everyone even remotely connected with their design and manufacture, the Empire issues a 'Dismantle on Sight' warrant for them. The IG-88 units take over the droid manufacturing planet Mechis III as a step in a plan to take over the galaxy. A reprogram signal is planted into every droid in the factory, which, when activated, will cause the droid to kill the owner. The Droid Revolution entered its first step at this point. Having heard of IG-88's exploits, Darth Vader calls upon the assassin droid to help track down the Millennium Falcon and its crew in The Empire Strikes Back. IG-88B, while hacking into Vader's Super Star Destroyer's computer, learns of the second Death Star and sends that information to its brethren. IG-88B follows Boba Fett to Cloud City, but Fett lays a trap and destroys the droid. IG-88C and D follows Fett to Tatooine to capture Han Solo, and Fett destroys both IG-88C and its ship, the IG-2000. Fett defeats IG-88D's ship when that droid attempts a subsequent attack. D survives and limps off to Ord Mantell, but is destroyed by Dash Rendar. IG-88A transfers its program into the second Death Star's computer and intends to take control of the space station to use it as the driving force of the Droid Revolution. When the superlaser, it was actually the droid in control. However, the droid's program was destroyed when the Rebel Alliance obliterates the Death Star
