Inza Nelson

Post-Crisis

Following the Crisis on Infinite Earths, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events.

Inza and Kent were discussing the best use for her Fate powers, and she considered cleaning up another city block. Phantom Stranger appeared, and recruited Inza, the Spectre was ready to cast judgment on the world, and Stranger needed heroes to stop him. He wanted to recruit John Constantine, but he was a complete wreck due to his alcoholism. Fate offered to cure him, but Stranger said that was not their place. Stranger got the Demon to join them by simply asking if he was stronger than the Spectre. Zatanna joined Stranger's crew, and explained that she would be the bridge between the corrupt Demon and the good Fate. He said after Madame Xanadu joined them their group would be complete. (Spectre v3 #16)

Stranger contacted Xanadu, and she already knew his plan, he hoped Spectre and Eclipso would destroy each other, or failing that be weakened enough for the Stranger to destroy the embodiments of wrath with the heart of darkness. Xanadu refused to join him, foreseeing his plan failing. Stranger called her petty, and she said the same was true of him for still blaming her for her mentor's foreordained demise. Eclipso possessed Spectre, and shatter the heart of darkness, allowing him to walk the Earth unfettered. Madame Xanadu was taking a different tack, along with Ramban and Father Craemer she summoned the soul of Jim Corrigan, hoping to reach the Spectre's human side, and knowing he'd been unstable since his anchor Amy Beitermann died. Father Craemer reached out to Jim, and Corrigan realized that he was very tired of his responsibility, and that he wished the world was gone so he could go into eternity. Craemer convinced him that there were other good souls like Amy Beitermann, Jim, revitalized, took back control of the Spectre form Eclipso, and entrapped him in the heart of darkness. He destroyed Eclipso's moon palace, and turned the heart of darkness into dust. The Spectre said his judgment was that he could only judge humanity on a case by case basis. The Archangel Michael appeared, and said Spectre had been tested, but passed. He would never have been allowed to destroy the world without God stopping him, and Heaven wanted Spectre to continue his work. Zatanna told Phantom Stranger their interference was unnecessary, especially if he already knew God would not have allowed Spectre to go unchecked, and Stranger replied that he acted as he saw fit. (Spectre v3 #18)

Overview

Personality and attributes

In appearance, Inza Nelson was a woman of elegant and refined features, with fair skin, light eyes, and auburn or red hair often styled neatly in accordance with her era’s fashion. During her earliest appearances, she was seen in dresses or travel attire befitting an archaeologist’s companion, while later depictions modernized her wardrobe to reflect her growing independence and intellect. When serving as Doctor Fate, she wore the traditional golden Helm and blue-and-gold armor, though her version of the costume was often portrayed with subtle feminine details distinguishing her from Kent. (Doctor Fate v1 #2)

Inza was compassionate, intelligent, and steadfastly loyal, possessing a deep moral center that often contrasted with the detached mysticism of Nabu. Her empathy allowed her to perceive emotional truths that others, even her husband, overlooked. While she initially served as a supportive figure, Inza evolved into an independent and strong-willed partner, unafraid to challenge the magical order when it conflicted with her sense of justice. Her time as Doctor Fate revealed a courageous spirit and a belief that power must serve humanity, not stand apart from it. This perspective gave her a unique place among the mystics of the world with her being a voice of conscience and compassion in a realm often ruled by cold logic and ancient laws. (Doctor Fate v2 #21)

Powers and abilities

Inza Nelson was an ordinary human and thus had no superhuman powers or enhancements. As such, she had all the basic traits of a human being. However, during her time as Doctor Fate, she gained access to vast mystical powers through the Helm of Nabu and the Amulet of Anubis. These artifacts granted her mastery over sorcery, enabling her to manipulate energy, teleport, heal, and summon protective spells. Her version of Fate’s magic tended toward restorative and defensive applications, reflecting her nurturing personality and moral conviction. Even without magical power, Inza possessed exceptional knowledge of arcane lore and psychological insight, making her an invaluable ally in both mortal and mystical affairs. Her combination of human empathy and divine empowerment made her one of the most balanced and emotionally resonant wielders of Fate’s mantle. (Doctor Fate v2 #23)
